Is it safe to go to Hawaii with Rolex

Hi,

Is it a good idea to wear my Datejust when going on vacation to Oahu. Not sure how secure are those safety deposit boxes in the hotel rooms. Usually I might wear the watch all the time but when on beach or pool not sure if those 100m water resistance can save from not getting water inside. And another thing because it's polished so fine I am afraid not to get scratches especially on the clasp. Or probably is better to go with my Breitling Superocean that is 500m WR and looks more rough.

I would wear it. Few scratches on that vacation would be welcome and hopefully memorable. Just my opinion of course.

You understand 100m is 100 meters correct? Meaning, you can use it to a depth of 100 meters. Unless you are planning on extreme deep diving, you’re not going deeper than a few meters, how would that not be safe?

The caveat here is 100m relates to the static pressure of 100m underwater. But if you get flung off a jet ski and hit the water at 20mph, you could subject the watch to more than that amount of pressure even if you never went more than 5' below the surface. Any way you slice it, 500m rated is significantly more water resistant than 100m, and would provide complete peace of mind. IMO.

That said, a little splish splash in the hotel pool is obviously going to be fine with either watch...

The coral looks safe and pretty, but inflict a mean scratch on watches if you get close. They have a special acquired taste and appetite just for rolex polished surfaces. Best to bring Apple Ultra watch of brietling.

Seriously though, if you want to keep mint, don't bring on trip. Hassles of airports, seat belts etc if they scratch the watch and put you in a bad mood (justifiably for your prized possession), not worth the headache or heartache on vacation. Enjoy the beautiful island!

I haven’t read this much misinformation in a long time.

I have dived from the 10metre tower at my local pool wearing my 14060 and it didn’t even know.

That is 30 mph entry speed.

It has zero effect on watch pressure resistance.

Splash your hands as much as you like.

Must be some pool if 100m water resistance isn't enough... I think best to leave at home in safe and only take out occasionally to wear in your living room. Avoid kitchen or toilet.

Are you going to go deeper than 330ft~? If not, your DJ41 will be fine! It’s not a complicated Patek that’s only splash resistant.

I would just wear the Breitling or no watch at all. A vacation’s priority should be enjoyment for one’s self. I don’t understand why you’re worried about these trivial concerns.

I don't think half the threads on this forum are. I've been on multiple forums but the type of questions grown men post here really makes me wonder...

I am not going to do any diving but don't want to take off my wrist when going in the ocean or pool. Far away of thinking to go 100m deep.

I would definitely take it. The only real risk is that you get tossed around in the waves a bit and ding it on coral.

Just being honest here - I would totally wear your Breitling. That's such a great water sports and all around casual watch and it sounds like you are already thinking that way, yourself. That's what it's designed for. You don't have to even think twice about it - sunscreen, saltwater, dinging it, scratches, you name it. It's the perfect watch for all of that. It's why you have a sports watch to begin with.

Sunscreen is the thing that I worry about more than water in Hawaii. And also a tan on your wrist. A Dive watch on Nato might be better. But what's the point of owning a nice watch if you can't even take it to Hawaii... So I'd say just do it. (assuming you have watch insurance already)

I agree. While I love to wear my Rolex watches, my favorite vacation and beach watch is my Superocean, for the reasons stated above

If you're concerned about scratches or water damage, it's probably best to take the Breitling. Vacations are for relaxation and enjoyment. Cheers

How long is a piece of string? Seriously, enjoy your holiday on Oahu, lucky you! You should be fine swimming with your Datejust. Personally, I don´t trust hotel safes, be they in your room or in the reception office. If you want complete piece of mind to enjoy yourself without worrying then why not take a G-Shock?
