If you're a watch and car guy, or gal...

Which one is more important to you, cars or watches?

I've had a sports car a few times (a few years each time) and when I take it out of storage it's exciting, but not like getting/wearing a new watch or even getting one back from service.

How about the rest of you?

Used to be cars but realized I'd rather spend disposable income on better traveling. After a while, cars seemed to lose their appeal as you only wanted to drive it in nice weather, didn't dare drive it to work and worry about a door ding, and spent a lot of money on insurance/premium fuel/detailing/etc. It just became more of a hassle than an enjoyment.

If I had a diary you just copied and posted it word-for-word.

I still have a car though, but that sounds exactly like me.

Cars are fun and I love driving a nice 'Vette but it does get to be more work than it's worth.

Where I live in the Midwest, I'd get MAYBE 5 decent months to drive it and I'd never drive it to work so that would just leave weekends. Well it seems like nearly every weekend in the summer there would be SOMETHING going on and most of these events would have alcohol. A sports car is just an excuse to get pulled over and it's not worth the risk.

I think the last year I had it I MAYBE put 2000 miles on it. Just wasn't worth having anymore.

Nowadays I just drive an F-150 and I'm quite content.

2 years ago, sold my wonderful BMW 550i GT, loved that car, at 6'4" it was like driving a Jet down the road in a massive lounge chair, but in Toronto, city is insane with traffic at all hours, dents, bumps constantly, a V8 Twin Turbo and never going above 20mph, just got tired of worrying about it.

Bought a cheap 2010 Jeep (was the cheapest on the lot I could comfortably fit into with a clean CarFax), and now give absolutely no "F's" if anything happens to it.

Miss the car, don't miss the worry....

Less and less interested in cars as time goes on. The average running costs for sports cars just didn’t make sense after a while.

That being said I still enjoy true 4x4s, they feel analogous to Rolex in some ways. Built to last, dependable, capable, under the radar, and easy to live.

They really are two different types of luxuries but I'll go with cars. If I still lived near a track, it would be cars by a wide margin. Never got much of an adrenaline rush off of a watch unless I stole it. I kid...

Timepieces... tho could be because I've already done the car thing.

Why not both :)

And cameras / lenses, can't forget those.

Truth. Literally 3 out of my top four toy categories.

If forced to make a choice - my S2000 and 911 bring me more joy than watches at this point in time.

Exact same thing - cars, cameras, saxophones and watches. It’s actually time to downsize pretty much all of them but I can’t bring myself to do that.

Always been a car nut first myself.

BTW - traded my Mark VI Tenor for a Miles Davis trumpet about 12-13 years ago. Never was much of a sax player - but played trumpet professionally for 40+ years.

False dilemma

I like both, but frankly I spend more on watches now than cars (quite happy with the car I have...no need to upgrade)

I love both but I also love moving around the country. Basically I dislike being tied to one location (with very few exceptions) for very long. It got really hard to deal with moving multiple vehicles, storing them, maintaining them, etc.

Watches are much easier in that regard.

In lockdown in 2020 I realised I had a lot of money sitting on my driveway that I literally couldn’t drive, for months on end. The odd trip to get shopping etc but no real travelling. It put me off spending money on cars. Then due to a shortage in production cars prices rocketed so I sold mine at a far higher price than it had been worth. Been sharing my wife and sons car ever since.

Watches however, I wore all through lockdown and every day since. Meant more to me and still do now.

I’d like a nice car again and I’m sure I’ll get one, it prices are still incredibly high so I’ll bide my time. Right now I’d rather buy a watch.

The question is like asking which I like more, my wife or my dog.

There's just no easy answers.

But I'm gonna have to go with wife and car.

And now I have TRF and the humane society on my back.

I suppose you’re right, although I do like my dog and he doesn’t complain if I buy another watch.

Yeah but since I wrote that I've been getting a lot of stink eye from my dog.

She's not mad, just really really disappointed.

I don’t know about more important but I do get a bigger thrill when I take my sports car on curvy back roads than when I wear my watch. In that sense it is more exciting to me.
