Pot Plant only 1/3rd dying...what to do?

Hi

My Lotus palm is 1/3 dying, I don't know why except maybe I over watered it...

Why though would only 1 of the 3 stems be dying? I'm thinking that the roots to that stem have become water logged or rotten and are not transporting nutrients to the main stem, but the other 2 stems are using other healthy roots to survive.

What is happening and what can I do????

I was watering it once per week but I guess that was too frequently. Maybe someone poisoned it? Or its got a disease?

Steve, that looks more like a Dracaena sanderiana (Lucky Bamboo Lotus).

Have a look at Plantsmith they're an Aussie specialist.

It is a Lotus Bamboo yes, but what has happened and how can I fix it?

Ahh....so not a Palm then.
I'd take it out of the pot, clean the roots, carefully cut that dead stem away.
Then divide the two healthy stems and re-pot (in separate pots), in fresh medium.
They are generally, tough as old boots, but overwatering is definitely to be avoided.
A little bit of natural light would probably do it some good.

Looks like an office environment?, so old coffee is probably not recommended.

The Canadian in me thought this thread was about pot plant(marijuana) lol....not my fault, it is legal here in Canada and no, I do not consume.

I would transfer you pot plant in another larger pot. There is also specific soil they sell for these types of plants that you may want to use. These types of plants do not need as much water you were using. Probably water every 10-14 days.

Lol recreationally legal to own in Nevada also. Thought for sure it would be a thread about the sticky

I have had the same experience and it is not reversible.

Environment, Fertilizing, and Hydration are key elements to avoid a downward spiral of the remaining culms.

Maybe move it first if you feel your feeding/watering is spot on. As you move into the Winter the light angle changes and less energy is provided.

You need to repot the plant, and get some proper drainage in the next planter. Probably just sitting in water that's not draining and drowning.

Sorry Steve, can't help w/ your specific question. In fact, I've been known to kill plastic plants.

But we are kinda proud of this Yucca that we bought 23 years ago that's reached 12' high and rising.

Agree. A terra cotta pot will wick off excess moisture.

Pot is likely too small or soil needs to be refreshed. If you were overwatering the other two would be in poor health too. Drop some tee tree oil on the top of the soil to flush out any mites before transplanting.

I have good luck with some plants and not so good with others, but if that's the workplace perhaps someone dumped something in there.

Overall the plant looks pretty healthy and looks like it can drain into the plate at the bottom.

So I would guess root bound or someone may have dumped something in there. Either way I'd repot it in new media and check out the roots.

I have a palm I've had for 30 some years and working on orchids these days.

I just got this plant to keep in the office. I've had it for about 1 year and it was growing really well until this event which happened within a couple of days, really quick. I think I will buy some high quality potting mix and repot the plant in the same pot (I think the pot is fine) but with better quality potting mix.
Obviously I'll have to remove the yellow stem (crying). I'll also give the roots a bit of a trim (about 30-50% reduction).

I'm pretty confident it is root rot from me overwatering the plant.
I paid $17 for the plant but its been a great little desk pal for the last 14 months. When I originally purchased the plant it had dull leaves with small spots. This seemed to be the result of the plant being nourished with fluoridated tap water. So I switched to rain/spring water and the leaves gained a deep green with a silky shine, and no spots and it grew nicely with new shoots.

I usually have no interest in plants and I don't have a garden but this Lotus Bamboo has sparked my interest.

Yes we always say "pot plant" for a plant in a pot. Not the illegal kind of pot

Steve has the original pot got any drain holes in bottom,if not best get a terracotta type pot a bit larger.Put some pebbles in bottom to stop soil from getting out,remove plant from old pot gently remove the dead part trying not to harm the rest of the good roots.Slip pot into new pot put soil in bottom first try plant in new pot for depth height to top of soil and pack new soil around until firm in new pot.Water but do not feed any fertilizer for around 6 weeks till plant recovers.

Get yourself a self watering container and repot it. You may need to trim the root ball.

My wife was pol pot to house potted plants until we bought those now our house is a jungle. You just pour some water in a little opening on the side and it does the rest for a few weeks.
