Cannot Decide Which Rolex To Get

Hi all,

For the past few months I have been researching and contemplating which Rolex reference/model I want to purchase. I am looking to acquire a new Rolex this week or next week at the latest. I have narrowed it down to a few models, 126610, 116613LN, 116622 rhodium, and the 18038. I really like all of these watches but would like to purchase only one of them. They all have pros/cons associated with them and I am having a good amount of trouble deciding which model to pull the trigger/focus my energy on. I have always admired the classic Submariner model since I was young, but see way too many of them today. I attend undergraduate college in the southeast US and many of my peers have 5 and 6 digit Submariner dates. I would like whichever model I purchase to be distinctive and ideally a little nicer than the ones possessed by my peers. Part of what makes Rolex special is the exclusivity and while I understand none of these models are particularly expensive, I would like to get the best model for my needs. For those that have experience owning these pieces, or could otherwise provide some much needed advice, your words would be greatly appreciated.

Nice problem to have.
The DayDate is very distinctive of course as it can be spotted from across the street anywhere in the world.
Not sure if that’s the attention you want on a daily basis.
But since you are undecided, maybe go try the watches on at local shops and take photos to see how you like the look on your wrist.
This may help narrow the field, plus you can look for the best example for the best price.

I’d focus on building up your credit profile while in college vs concerning yourself with a watch.

You want to hit the ground running and avoid being like many other graduates who lack credit history and miss out on investment/purchasing opportunities. Watches will be plentiful later on. (From someone not that much older than you).

From someone who is a lot older than you, forgot what this guy said. You don’t need an “I love debt” (FICO SCORE). Just keep saving and paying in cash. Trust me as someone who didn’t find this out until later in life. Stick to the no credit card life. Debt is no fun.

i hate to go off topic but this is such bad advice that i had to comment. credit scores matter a lot when you're young because you'll even run into issues with renting apartments with a bad score or no credit history in competitive markets. no one here is saying debt is good or even to buy a rolex on a credit card, but you need to have good credit for many things in todays world when you're starting out. there's nothing wrong with credit cards if you use them properly because they'll just give you free money in cash back

simply telling someone "just save more bro" is such an ignorant comment in todays financial climate where salaries don't go nearly as far as they used to and when directed at people just starting their adult lives. most people already come out of college with huge debt thanks to schools costing tens of thousands a year anyway

To be fair to Easy E, I don’t think he was trying to say that YOU are buying your Rolex on credit because of TikTok, but rather that the reason your initial concern exists (lots of fellow students running around campus with 5 and 6 digit submariners) is because of credit usage and social media.

To answer your initial question, why not get a GMT? It’ll set you apart from all the sub wearing folks on campus and still giving you something sporty a younger person can wear easily. I was broke in my college years but if I had the money then I’d have loved a Rolex GMT!

Sounds like you're going for bragging rights. In which case a DD is the strongest candidate.

An alternative possibility is that you haven't yet found the watch that sings to you. When you find the one that you've absolutely got to have, and damn what anybody else thinks, you won't need to ask anyone else. Maybe it's still waiting for you?

Personally, I'd take your peers out of the equation.
Nothing beats a SS Sub for a first or only watch. If I were starting all over that would be my choice.

Day Date is an old man’s watch. Doesn’t have a college vibe. I had a Timex Ironman in college. Lol. I guess times have changed. Is this your money? I’m 65 and think all Rolex’s are expensive. SD43 is where it’s at. More “presence “ than a mere Submariner. Sub on steroids would definitely one up your friends and colleagues.

For what you're looking for - to look a certain way - the 116613LN and 18038 are the way to go due to the PM.

That aside, I don't think you'll enjoy this purchase after everyone you want to see it has seen it once. Rather buy what you like, be that a Casio or a Patek...

A SS Submariner is the choice. I would go with the 114060 or the 124060, which are the No Date model. Perfectly balanced dial and a bracelet that can adjust to any changes in your wrist on the fly. The DD is nice but a choice for down the road and a TT watch is just that, TT. The Submariner is a great place to start and for some to finish. You will not regret a purchase and the watch will serve you a lifetime, even add the DD or others down the road. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

I followed the crowd, sold my DJ36 of 20 years and bought a 5 digit Sub Date.

As you say, everyone and his dog has one, plus it was a dull monochrome blob. Same as all the other divers watches out there at a glance. Traded it after a short while for a DJ41.

Don't be a sheep, go for something different as you seem to be saying anyhow.

It's a mass produced watch bud. It's a great watch, with the most exceptional marketing on earth. They have managed to be able to plaster their name everywhere without people finding it tacky (F1, Golf, Tennis), which is incredible when you think about it.

126610: Classic, can't go wrong
116613LN: Two-tone, pass.
116622: Unique and therefore the best for you.
18038: Yellow gold, for old men, not young guys (gals).

I agree that the Yachtmaster is certainly special. Not sure why it is significantly less popular than the Submariner. I'm curious why you passed on the two tone, it seems there is an unwritten rule that people must hate the two tone watches around here.

i disagree that day dates are for old guys considering tons of people in their 20s/30s get one nowadays, but i think they would look ridiculous if you're in college

Agree with this. In absolutely no way is a DD an old man watch…I think that comment comes from people who can’t afford one to be brutally honest.

I’d also focus less on trying to flex on others but you’re in that age group and I get it….you’ll eventually grow out of that and realize the way to go is to buy what you actually like.

My choice....the YM. Its literally a nicer version of a submariner. Its more distinctive and flasher than your friends Subs. I love the feel on the wrist, the case design hugs the wrist....
