Platonic Ideal?

When you think of a wristwatch, which watch comes to your mind? A lot of people say a Rolex OP.. some say no-date Sub. For me, it’s the Sub..

Can you share your ideal?

It’s just a sub. No such thing as a no-date sub.

There's the Submariner and the Submariner Date. And it'd be the 16710 GMT Pepsi for me.

This would probably be my answer as well.

I think of Rolex when I think wristwatch. What's the most iconic Rolex, the DJ, which was my first Rolex, but my mind goes to Submariner (date or sans), GMT or Daytona.

I don't have a specific model in mind when I hear Rolex. Sub Date, DD, OP, Daytona, AK, Milgauss, YM all come to mind. FWIW, Sub is low down the list.

3 watches that come to mind, probably ingrained from childhood. First is some kind of plasticy/resin watch. Swatch or Casio. Another is a generic steel Seiko. Finally, a Rolex Datejust, which for much of childhood I thought was the best and most expensive wristwatch available.

The first Rolex that I ever noticed many years ago was a Sub Date and I remember that distinctly because I thought at the time that a dive watch with a date on it was stupid. As I’ve grown older I have softened my stance on that. However I have also observed that the Rolex whose design language seems to be most emulated by other manufacturers is also the Submariner. So the Sub in any of its iterations gets my vote.

Submariner 18K/SS 16613 black dial/bezel comes to mind when I hear the word “wristwatch”. That was the first Rolex I ever bought in 2001. Wife bought it for me actually.

The first thing I ever noticed on a Rolex was the cyclops. When I was a kid I thought that was the coolest thing, so whenever I saw an adult wearing a watch I looked for a cyclops.

That watch I saw was probably a DJ.
