Vintage Rolex circa 1960

The pictured watch is listed in a local (U.K.) respected auction house with a guide price of £400 to £600.

No info on whether working or authenticated as genuine.

Worth a punt at that money?

First time vintage buyer - appreciate it would require service etc at best.

The case, lugs and crown aren’t encouraging. The dial with Super Precision was typically an Air-King scripted one.

The price is so low that you may be enticed. But as your first vintage watch you might choose a better one.

Thanks - I wondered at that price if it was worth a go and getting the case etc polished?

If the case is gold, it will not go that cheap, auction estimates are not always intended to be accurate. Are those the only photos?

More images.

Appreciate auction price may be higher than the guide, but hey I can drop out of the bidding!

Description is generic - “A vintage gentleman's Rolex Perpetual 9ct gold wristwatch, circa 1960“.

1530 movement at least matches super precision on the dial. But like mentioned above, case and crown is encouraging

Thanks - do you mean “discouraging”?

Could they be polished easily enough, or would that ruin the value?

The back of the case also has a presentation engraving on it.

I'm not familiar with these watches. Perhaps an entry-level piece that was imported as a movement and cased in the UK. Or perhaps it was re-cased at some point. Perhaps some of our UK members are familiar with these. A photo of the inside of the case-back might help.

There are plenty examples of same model / case from a Google image search. Sadly i don’t have enough post counts to paste a link.

But the case in the one in question looks a bit tarnished and I’m not sure how easy it is to get it polished. If the gold is plating, then is polishing possible?

If you found other examples, why not share the information you found. Is it a UK-cased watch? Does it have a reference number? What is the case material? Etc. Superficial tarnish can be removed using a jeweler's cloth, but most vintage watch enthusiasts appreciate the signs of age. Beyond removing tarnish, polishing is definitely not recommended since it will further degrade the shape of the case.
