Rolex wearing - Senegal

Hello all. I'm working in Dakar Senegal for the next few years. Want to take my 126613LN to wear daily.

I know it's west Africa and ask that but would anyone chance it.!!

Been there s few months now and it seems OK so far.

Most of Africa is actually surprisingly safe. I’ve lived and traveled within the continent and never felt unsafe. People know the name Rolex, but don’t know how to identify one nor would expect one to wear a real one. It isn’t even a thought.

Have to agree but today some that buy Rolex watches automatically think they will get robbed if they wear them outside in the big wide world.

Agree with this sentiment pretty well. I traveled pretty extensively in the past to many so called 3rd world countries wearing one. Never was noticed nor an issue.

I have been many times mainly SA and there is a lot of truth in what you say, your phone is more recognisable to most however J-Berg is a different story many know what a Rolex is and how to get them.

Here’s my anecdotal experience, currently living in east Africa (multiple years), in a country with an explicit “do not travel” advisory through the state dept. Travel all throughout the continent with my Rolex Explorer on at all times.

People want your pocket change, and bad people want your iPhone. Average bad person is not as brazen as in the US. In 99% of Africa (save for maybe Joburg) someone who has bad intentions will attempt to trick you into taking your possessions. A common one in this region is drive by, spit on your pants, attempt to wipe your pants to clean it off and viola, phone is gone out of your pocket.

I can’t stress this enough, should this be read by people considering travel with their Rolex. No one cares about your watch. The world is huge and very complex, I can assure you Africans are not waiting for you to arrive in order to steal your Rolex. It’s mental. If you cannot deal with the mental stress, then don’t wear one. I’ve had one on nonstop and never felt worried. In fact, I think it might actually help should there be a coup d'état, which happens in east Africa.

I wouldn’t lean too hard on statistics. Statistics in Africa is an abyss, and it’s rare you’ll get accurate reporting on just about anything.

None of this is in the capital city of Dakar, and I imagine the original poster of this thread will be remaining largely in the western enclaves where it is extremely safe.

Wow that is a two tone submariner ! That is some serious bling. I’d hesitate to wear it around NYC unless I have a jacket covering it up (and I live in NY). I used to wear my Rolex into the city… maybe in the winter but now don’t do so in the summer when I’m wearing short sleeves.
It just attracts unwanted attention and no need to even question safety.

Dude, get a Seiko 5 and call it a day.

Absolutely not. Many years ago I was in Senegal (mostly Dakar) for a short time, and remember wearing a really cheap Citizen three-hander. No problems. But nowadays I´d say get a solar-powered G-Shock and keep your Rolex safe back home in England. Why tempt fate? Hope the people are still as friendly as they were back in the day!

While they may not be the "sophisticated" rings of watch thieves in major American or European cities, I would say that you'd be rolling some serious dice wearing bright blue & YG watch in a country where its value could feed an entire community for a year.

Get a Citizen Eco-Drive or a G-Shock. I'd be sad about giving away a G-Shock at machete-point, but not heartbroken.
