Advise on a 1969 1675 GMT Master Pepsi

Hello,

My father is looking to sell his vintage GMT. I believe it's a Mark 1 with long E. He is working with a place called "WatchPayer". They seem to be really low-balling him. Just doesn't seem to be a legit outfit.

What would be the best way for him to get a fair deal on it?

Thank you!

I would reach out to a dealer from the forum. I like Tim at Fog City and many work with Jacek at Tropical Watch, both good for older stuff. Don't get bamboozled. Springer may have some advice from GMT land.

Loupethis.com is an option if you would consider an auction. In any case, be prepared to send better photos.

Watch: What is "watch"?
Your question is really contingent on several factors that you haven’t laid out here. Is the watch all factory original? Original paperwork with it? Any service parts? Original bracelet still on the watch?

What are you being offered?

I will add the insert is fake or after market. Not sure about the dial but better pics would help as it is quite blurry. You might give the serial number too and blur out the last three digits. Give some shots of the side of the watch to see affects of polishing. Perhaps a pic of the inside case back, it should have a date code inside if Pre-70. Shots of the clasp to determine originality of the bracelet also the end links.

Get a clearer photo of the dial please. Need to see all of “Rolex” …

Also, that’s a fake bezel insert

Newbie here trying to learn; what in this blurry image tells you so definitively that this is a fake insert?

Thank you all! He's had the GMT since the 70s and he's now 80.

The bracelet was replaced in I believe 1984 (OEM 93150). He did the bezel himself and can't locate the original.

He has no paperwork and no box. Asking him to provide better pictures.

Some of the aforementioned dealers may not even be buying. I believe they may only work with trade ins. I know I’ve tried to sell some watches for someone else and they were turned down because they were “not buying T this time.”
Regardless, you would need to find a dealer who specializes in vintage watches, or take your chances on eBay if you have excellent feedback, great photos and lots of details, and if you can show you are overall honest. Lots of shadyness and scams out there.

That's interesting, but it is a risky time to buy with the market moving so quickly. Maybe they will still take watches on consignment.

What is the offer he is receiving? Rolex vintage sports models are very slow to sell recently. I'd say I'd expect a $9k to $10k offer from a dealer, with the fake bezel insert.

Why aren't they lowering the prices then? I rather not pay 15-25k for a 1675/16750/5513/1803/18238. Or do they accept offers for 3-4k less?

less for that watch I suspect, dealers want to be able to minimal work and not sit on watches that need a lot of work unless they can get them cheap.

If you are in no hurry I would consider sending it to a vintage watchmaker who can tell you what you have or perform any needed service and who knows maybe you will reconsider selling and keep this heirloom!

I have my 5513 Sub in the hands of Phillip Ridley, and I am sending him a 1675 GMT next and turnaround time is expected to be under a month right now.

So, you have no idea where to even sell a watch but you have a library of photos, each with a different background and one with the watch fully disassembled, and your father replaced the insert himself and lost the original?
Good luck.
