Help? Serial number on stolen watch

Hi Rolex sages,
In 2020 I received a Datejust SS and everrose 36mm with diamond dial and bezel from my then fiancé. I have no idea where he bought it (I've called every Rolex dealer in his area, and where his other homes were. He registered it and insured it. He died of covid 10/02/20, 2 months before our wedding. I placed the watch and all documents in the Rolex bag and placed it in my closet next to my safe. I took pictures of the watch, but not the serial number.

My home was broken into while I was home, asleep. I have an alarm system and cameras, but not in my closet. He came in through the doggie door and wore a bellaclava (knitted hat with mask) It was the guy who painted my house a year ago.

He took my Rolex, bag and all documentation, and some other things.

The police have requested the serial number and model number. I'm an idiot, I did not keep a record of it. I've been too sad to wear the watch, so I figured it was safe.

Any advice anyone can give me would be extremely appreciated!

just curious, how do you know it was the guy who painted your house? did they catch him?

Check with the insurance company. They usually ask for a serial number when insuring a watch.

Sorry to hear about all this. Other than going through his credit card/financial records for purchase documentation or calling ADs, I don’t see what else you could do. Rolex doesn’t maintain a central database with customer records that you could access.

HHIslander, I've called probably 25 ADs, his go to gift shops were Cartier & Tiffany, but for Rolex, I have no clue. I called his best friends and brothers and they gave me a few of the places I called.

Dangson, He insured it. When he died the policy ended. I didn't insure it yet because I haven't worn it and I thought my house was extremely secure.

Wraithchild, it's a door for a medium dog. He's 5'4" and slight. This is my 3rd Rolex and I have a few other luxury watches. The serial #s of those are in my safe. I was just an idiot with this one. I kept everything, including the card he gave me in the Rolex bag next to the safe. I have a court case to prepare for next week, so, no I'm not trolling.

Omar, yes, the police caught him about 1/4 mile from my home. He was hiding in a garbage can shirtless and no bellaclava was found on him. He had a backpack but all that was in it was my latex cleaning gloves and 1 floral sock of mine. He obviously ditched the stuff elsewhere.

I suggest starting with the insurance company that originally insured the watches for your fiancee. I would think, he would have had to provide serial numbers to insure the watches.


Next contact the executor of his estate. Hopefully, he/she is willing and able to access your financee's bank and credit card records and search for the payment to the AD. Start with the bank statements, looking for a large credit card payment or if lucky a wire transfer to an AD. When/if they find the large credit card payments, search the credit card statements from that month.

OP, have you checked any pictures you may have to see if the numbers are on them - just a thought !

some more ideas:

1) look at the pics to see if the serial is visible on either the rolex card OR on the watch itself, it will be at the bottom inside the dial. Post some pics here we can try to identify

2) call a Rolex Service Center and ask them to run your fiance's name. its possible he may have had the watch serviced

3) look at his old CC statements if you can... you might see a purchaser around that time from a reseller, it doesnt necessarily have to be an AD, but maybe a third party watch dealer.

4) even though his insurance policy ended, you should still be able to call them and get his old statements or contract. just ask them to resend it to an address they had on file or have a family member call them, or the police detective.

Agree with ZOOK, my insurance carrier requires Serial and Model numbers for all of mine..

whilst our watches are insured we just gave details of them but no serial number !
