Icon5 Frustrated with Rolex sizes

I tried one of my friend's 126710BLNR this morning and, while I find it extremely nice, it's also quite a bit too small for me.

The same happened last week with another friend's 126719BLRO which is even nicer (imho), and again before that with a Daytona.

I love all these watches, but I'm a tall, fairly muscular guy and, as beautiful as they are, they look out of place and, frankly, quite lost on my large wrist. That's the main reason why I own a Sea-Dweller and no other Rolex.

What's the rationale for having so many variations of the GMT and Daytona but not a single one for larger wrists? Is there any hope they ever offer a 42mm of these?

Thank you!

A modern Explorer II might be what you're looking for. Or wear two SD43s so you can have two different time zones.

It's all a matter of perception.

For ~50 years watches were smaller than they are today, as a whole.

GMTs, Daytonas, Subs were all around 37-38mm.

Better for wrists to be too large than too small for current Rolex, as the watches are still pretty large to many.

I have a similar dilemma (having a large wrist)

A 226570 might work for you, stop by an AD and try one on.

The polar dial perceptually looks bigger to me than the black dial.

Do an internet search for the exact size and type of GMT you would like. There are lots of other nice watch brands, besides Rolex.

Fully understand OP. That's why I have an SD43 - the perfect diver and actually the perfect watch. It's the one I would keep if I were to liquidate my collection. Highly recommended, try one on.

Certainly the SS GMT and Sub feel downright dainty in comparison. Small and light.

Try a TT or PM variation of those other sports models. They definitely have more 'heft' and presence.

Panerai may be for you :)
Try an Explorer 2 or skydweller.

I do own an SD43, but I'd love to have a Daytona or GMT-Master II at the same size.

I’m a big guy with around an 8.5 inch wrist. The GMTs, daydates etc I keep trying but don’t last long. Now daily between my JC deepsea and explorer 2 with a rose gold skydweller for special occasions.

Love the skydweller that much I’ll add a blue dial stainless in the next few weeks

6’3” 200 lbs here. I happily wear a 36mm to 42mm watch with a preference of 38-40mm. Love the Daytona.

From many posts on here I personally feel far more people wear a watch that is too big for them rather than too small.

Just my opinion.

100%!!

I’m a bear of a guy with a 8.25” wrist and I wear a 36mm OP. Before getting my Rolex, I wore a Tag Heuer Professional 200 daily which is 37mm. I never got the trend of giant watches. I actually love the look of Panerai but they are just so bloody big I can’t imagine wearing one. Anything over 40 feels so big to me.

I never got a Panerai in the past due to thinking they are too large. Happened to pop into an AD on vacation and saw their new 40mm Luminor. Bought it and wear often. It’s great! I have 7.5” flat wrist.

That’s a beautiful watch. I can’t get past the crown guards though. I don’t like the feeling of it digging into my hand. I guess you avoid that wearing it on your right wrist though. If I were to get a Panerai I’d get a Radiomir for the lack of crown bulk.

That’s true. As a lefty I don’t have the crown guard digging in. Radiomir is awesome too. Either way, a smaller sized Panerai appealed to me.

Lol - agreed I'm 6'4", 230lbs and wear 36mm no problem. Daytona, GMT, Sub and my 36mm DayDate all wear fine.

I had a Panerai 422 47mm for about a year and loved it, but was without a doubt a massive watch.

I never watched the Sopranos when it first came out, and it wasn't until years later till I finally figured out why a few of my friends would yell, "Hey Tony!!" when I'd arrive.

Same as I've never understood the entire 36mm is a ladies watch, Daytona's are a ladies watch, or women can't wear whatever watch they want....my opinion only.

I am 5'8" and weigh 132 lbs. My wrist size is 7 and I feel that the 36mm is slightly small even on my wrist...

It's a good question: why don't Rolex make all their popular models in multiple sizes. As they do with the Explorer, in both 36mm and 40mm. I've no idea, of course but ... I'm glad they don't. And I don't really know why! It's bizarre. I think I think that if Rolex rolled-out a 43mm Daytona alongside the 40mm Daytona, and did the same with the GMT, it would feel ... sort-of pandering. It would feel ... a little too keen broaden its market for those models. Not quite desperation but ... grabby.

There's something so ... classy about having a relatively limited number of models in a relatively limited number of sizes. But I can't quite explain why.

You need to look no further than Omega's Speedmaster line to find an example of a manufacturer having the exact opposite of Rolex's strategy. Omega has the 44mm "Dark Side" Speedmaster models, which I suppose is great if your wrist is on the larger side. Omega gives the consumer more options. Whether that is good or bad from a brand prestige standpoint is something that's up for debate.

True but the thickness of them is comical. I used to own many in the past but since the Calibre 8500, their watches have become too thick!. Rolex makes a much more refined watch imo.

I don't disagree at all. I love Omega as a brand, probably more than I do Rolex. However with the bloated thicknesses and the very modern-looking designs I have doubts about how well some of their current catalogue will age.

Rolex makes a 40 mm GMT. That's what they make. Buy it, don't buy it. There are make great looking watches that I don't like the size of. Choice is the spice of life. However size is a subjective thing that one becomes accustomed to. Trying on a watch size is very different to wearing it for a few days. It is the same as your tastes and preferences which change over time.
