Bottle of Wine suggestion ~$2,000 bottle

Hello wine people, I want to buy a friend a single bottle of nice red as a thank-you. He is a label snob. What does the brain trust recommend for a huge red in the $2,000 range? I’m thinking California or French, unless someone has another suggestion?

Thanks in advance

To my brain, it sounds silly to spend $2000 on a bottle of something disposable for a friend. But I get that expensive wine is what some people love

One of my favorite wines.

I found a 2000 chateau haut-brion.

If you're intent on spending that much money, why not a little more and buy in bulk, Costco style? A case of six (6) bottles of Opus One for $2400, but act now, and we'll throw in 5% off for your first order!

I love a good Bordeaux and you can spend your budget and much more for a Chateau's good vintage. I've spent more than I care to think about over the years. I would suggest if you want to gift an excellent wine that will age well and may impress him with your out of the norm thought I would look closely at a selection of Super Tuscans. Some of the best wine in the world and well respected by most if not all connoisseurs. Your budget would allow for 3 to 5 bottles from some excellent vineyards and superb vintages. Most if not all can be found online through wine-searcher. Here's the list I would recommend.

1971 Marchesi Antinori Tignanello Toscana IGT
2019 Massetino Toscana IGT
2019 Marchesi Antinori Solaia Toscana IGT
2019 Le Macchiole Messorio Toscana IGT
2020 Bibi Graetz Colore Toscana IGT

If you wanted something that would be a bit interesting to a Wine Snob and would deliver the goods in terms of quality as well, you could search your local Wine Retailers for some Penfolds Grange Hermitage. This is the premium Australian red wine and cellars well for many decades. Quality-wise it can match the best in the world and you would be able to pick up a bottle with 30 years on it for around US$1000. Buy two, because after the first, he is going to want more. I have experience with cellaring this wine and it won't disappoint.

A 3 bottle crate of penfold grange hermitage is on the short list. However, I believe it’s 2019 (do you have any experience with newer vintages?). Thank you for the suggestion.

I have consumed a limited amount of the newer vintages, simply because they are so expensive upon release and at 72yrs old I can no longer expect to cellar them for a couple of decades.
The issue is that Grange is a wine that really needs a minimum of a decade and preferably two before it is starting to drink at it's best. Personally, I never opened a bottle less than 20 years old. On that basis, I would be trying to buy something with at least a decade on it.
Even though the Cellarmasters will equivocate about which years are the best vintages (and prices reflect this) really, there are NO poor vintages.
If you decide to go in this direction, there is a fair bit of information on the net on Australian retailer sites about vintages/prices which provides a bit of insight to which are considered the most desirable vintages and what they sell for. Good luck with your quest.

You say your friend is a label snob.
How about a case of vintage Dom Perignon?

The cheapest Petrus ($3K) is probably outside of your budget.
But, if you want to impress.......

Agree, best in the world and if you are that way inclined a handy investment, however I just drink it.

Aficionados will break down the years and I am sure there is merit to the reasoning, trust me any year is a good year.

At this price point I’m guessing he is a collector and id venture a 6 vertical of young Opus One or 3 of young Mouton would be memorable. If you do single bottle, are you open to large format?

Yeah, a nice Jereboam, or perhaps a Methuselah, or even a Nebuchadnezzar! Then he could make a nice lamp with the empty

That’s what I was thinking go magnum.

I don’t drink anything that expensive, but I have some mid-range stuff like Quintessa 2014 magnum in the nice walnut box.
