Martinis for begginner

Taking the wife out to a restaurant tonight that doubles as a vodka and gin distillery. I want to order a drink so I can try their spirits. Figure a martini is the way to go. I've only had a couple martinis in my life, so I need some TRF guidance on what martini(s) to order? Should I start with just a classic? I have no clue what I'm doing. Steer me in the right direction martini afficionados!

Well as you know Mike, Andrea and I tend to put of few back on occasion

Out go to is Tito’s, dry (a touch or vermouth) dirty (olive brine) and a blue cheese olive. We like them on the rocks too. The one in the wrist shot has pimentos (which are not as good IMO).

Thanks for the tips and great pictures. I've had a dirty so I think I'll check into the tito's. Is that gin or vodka? Yours a lucky man - my wife won't go near a martini.

it’s my wife who got me into them.

Titos is a vodka.

Good luck … it’s an acquired taste

I want to try the vodka they make there. So do I just ask for a classic vodka martini? Anything else I need to do?

I've had a couple in my life. The dirty one I had recently with gin was a little tough. Others have been better.

I’d say so yes. If they’re making their own vodka they outta know how to mix you a good one

Just wear a dinner jacket and order it shaken, not stirred. Watch out for SPECTRE agents.

Tito’s is good, Dripping Springs might even be better (vodka). Order it “up” and extra dirty with blue cheese stiffed olives = perfection.

The blue cheese olives sound like a great idea!

I’d suggest asking the bartender what they recommend or what’s the best martini they make and go with that for the first one.

Yes, I think this is the move. "I'm new to martinis & want your recommendations about which one(s) I should try & which you enjoy the best." That's a great conversation starter & a way for the bartender to be proud of their craft.

Just a friendly reminder, martinis are pretty much straight gin or vodka so less is more. Enjoy and have fun!

“ Loudmouth Soup “

A little goes a long way

Enjoy!!!

Well folks I survived. My first vodka martini was very good. Followed it up with an "autumn" old fashioned, which is basically a standard old fashioned with some Brandy added in. Appreciate the help fellas!

I started with vodka martinis then my friend introduced me to gin martinis and they changed my life. Dirty Bombay sapphire is heavenly.

If you’re trying to appreciate a gin or vodka, I don’t see why making it a dirty martini makes sense. All that olive juice just overwhelms any other flavor in the glass. Just MHO.

I went with olives but no olive juice. Does that still count as dirty? I did ask about blue cheese olives, but no luck.

I noticed they gave me 4 olives, which I hear is bad luck (even number) so I made sure to eat one of them to get it down to 3

Good for you! I don't think so. A dirty martini has olive juice in with the gin/vodka and a bit of dry vermouth. Putting olives in a martini doesn't make it "dirty," it's just good common sense!

No, you need olive juice for it be a dirty martini, and ideally, some blue cheese sprinkled into the drink, too.

Vodka Martini for me. Dirty with blue cheese olives. My favorite. The key is the perfect amount of olive juice. Too much or too little could ruin it.

Exactly right.

Also, that’s why we don’t use a really good vodka. It’s about the blended taste and you don’t need super expensive vodka in a dirty Martini IMO.

Thanks, I think I understand now.

I really liked the clean and crisp taste of it without the olive juice. I've never really loved the taste of olives in general. I think I'll try one with a twist next time.
