Seeking Advice: Got my wife a gift and hoping I did not make a mistake

I purchased an oyster perpetual from a gray market dealer...They came highly recommended, have impeccable reviews, and have been great answering my questions.

I have done several checks, even driving the watch to an AD to have them peak at it but just want to triple-check before I satisfy my worry.

There is two pieces of dust under the glass and one area of irregularity on the L of Rolex. I am totally ok with the defect as long as this is just a normal factory irregularity. I am hoping someone here can tell me if I am just being overly worried or If I need to consider sending the watch back.

The spot is on the bottom of the L in the middle.

I know I sound picking, I love the watch and just trying to making sure I am not overlooking something serious.

The seller has been absolutely amazing with my concerns but keeps telling me that it is from his supplier who they trust, I will not mention his name.

The watch is a great model.
However, I would return it to get the specks of dust removed.
Given that you have seen them, there is now way you can get them out of your mind.
These specks of dust typically are not present on a Rolex watch.
Maybe what has happened is the case has been polished and the dial/movement was removed and not kept in a dust free receptacle.

Thank you. Yeah, I am happy to send it to get it serviced/or ask them to have it done at their cost to remove the flecks......I am just making sure it is something simple or perhaps they removed it to authenticate and got a little dust. Just don't want to ignore out of being naive.

I doubt these can be seen without a magnifier.
If you must it will take less than a half hour to remove the dust particles and any watchmaker can do it.

A loupe is Rolex worst enemy and almost every Rolex has imperfections if you compare to high horology brands.
That’s to be expected when turning out a million watches per year.

Throw the loupe away and have the Mrs enjoy this great reference

Neither my wife nor I would be able to see those blemishes on a 31mm watch. As has been said above, it should be simple and quick for a competent technician to fix it.

If the watch has been authenticated by an AD I wouldn’t worry. It will need servicing one day and the dust specks can be addressed then. As for the L, throw away your loupe.

I would not say it was authenticated. But I was told not to worry by one ( no guarantees but they said it looked right)

Is “authenticate” the wrong word? Perhaps you can make a sticky of acceptable words, their meaning and appropriate context for usage.

OP says he took it to an AD for a look, OP doesn’t say the AD threw up any red flags, OP implies AD is not concerned about authenticity. Call it whatever you like but definitely continue with the super helpful semantic hairsplitting.

As others have said, those specs would be difficult to see without magnification. What would concern me more is the hour marker at the 6:00 position covering a portion of the black Rolex Crown printed on the dial between Swiss Made. Could be the angle of the photo but with the index marker applied flat on the dial I doubt the angle of the photo would affect the image. That would never pass QC at Rolex. His pic was taken at an angle to chow the LEC crown it seems.

Stop using a magnifier and you problems will be resolved. No reason to turn something that cant be seen into a problem. Rolex is in no way perfect

All the paperwork, warranty card, and white tag match and have the correct numbers and look right as rain too mean...I am no expert and if it was just for me I would not be asking....just want it right for my wife. The seller has been amazing and has guaranteed that if it is not absolutely origin and right he will refund in full.


And I just saw that my warranty card should have an RFID chip which worked... :)

That was my first thought, as well. A lot of sought after OP colors have aftermarket dials. I would try to source one from one of our trusted sellers here on the forum. They should still be able to get it to you by Christmas.

For what it's worth I am an antique diamond person so I own a loupe. My 31mm has some small what appear to be tiny left behind pieces from a wiping cloth on the dial. I am not bothered enough to do anything about it just think it's probably not a good idea to loupe the watch in the future.

I would not worry about the dust specs. I would worry if it is the absolute perfect choice for your wife. If she said this is the exact watch I want you have no worries, if it's a boy I sure hope this is the right watch and she loves it you may have a problem. You should have let her pick.

Op, Rolex quality control is very good but far from perfect. I’ve seen new watches with dust in the dial or a spec on the hands and even a small circle chip in the ceramic bezel brand new with the tags on it, based on how are made one here or there is not the end all.

Rolex will always make it right if there is a problem.

Did you receive the white tag with the piece? That will tell you what dial it came with from Rolex or RSC can tell you which dial it came with from the factory.

I don’t think it looks that bad , the dial would worry me more.
This is a hard call because it is a gift! If you’re not happy and can return it do so.

It sounds like you're being thorough, which is great. Dust specs and minor imperfections are sometimes part of the manufacturing process. If the AD didn’t raise any concerns, you’re likely fine. Trust the seller, but if it still bothers you, you could consider a replacement.

If the irregularities on the "L" are minimal and the watch has been checked by an AD, it is probably unnecessary to return the watch. However, if you are still concerned about the stain or irregularity of the logo, it would be prudent to ask a specialist watchmaker
