Fires, LA Ca. Stay Safe

I spent a good part of last night watching the live news feeds from LA regarding the wildfires, only to wake up this morning to find it has gotten much worse.

I know we have quite a few members here from the area. Prayers being sent your way. Hopefully they get a handle on the fires sooner than later.

Be Safe.

This fire is terrible. My friend’s parents lost their home in Malibu most likely as their neighborhood was already burning as they drove out. Sad thing is, they’re both really old and already fully remodeled their house once so not sure what they’re going to do.

Last night the evac warning in Santa Monica was all the way to Montana, which is maybe 5-6 blocks from the Santa Monica Pier.

Even seeing the shots of the fire skipping PCH and burning lifeguard towers is insane.

I’m hoping I luck out and can escape up here until I retire.

Last night I was listening to the LAC V1 scanner and they were reporting injuries, engines taken out of commission and other things none of which I have seen reported on TV.

It wouldn’t surprise me if there are fatalities once people are able to access the burned areas. Some of the footage is insane of people still in their house with fire raging right next to them.

Up here we had a fire start one hill over due to electrical equipment. Our power went off, so I looked up what was happening. As soon as I found out I looked over that way and I could see smoke, I got my wife and immediately packed our go box and got a carrier down for our kitty. So I was ready to go within 5 minutes or so. It’s not worth playing with your life, when it’s red flag conditions you gotta be ready to go.

The winds here are horrible...not as bad during the day as overnight (at least in my area), and are predicted to settle down in the early afternoon, so hopefully the firefighters will be able to get a handle on things.

I met someone last week who lost their home in the fires in November, he got out with a lot of stuff for his kid, and one box of his own childhood possessions, but that's it. Said he went back after and his entire street was burned to the ground.

Hopefully all the residents heed the warnings to evacuate when told and the firefighters stay safe.

When we vacation in CA, it's Pasadena, Calabasas, Malibu and Woodland Hills where we have family. This is tragic and we are far away bystanders, but very, very sad. Hoping for a quick resolution, but this is frightening. I had to watch local coverage via Roku last night..just gutted for these areas, and it seems far from over.

Hope all my northern watch e-friends here are safe. There have been a few pop-up fires in San Diego County, but thankfully, they've all been extinguished and/or contained.

It is very difficult to express the ramifications and magnitude of these fires. I am on the edge of my seat, maybe 2 miles or less from where they are currently in SM. It is complete devastation in the palisades.

Thank you for the kind words, it really helps you reevaluate life. Think of having a only a few minutes to grab your most prized possessions and family heirlooms. You can see the below video is through a neighborhood ~15 minutes from me that a friend sent earlier. Wild the sheer destruction.

Can't figure out how to embed it but here is the link: https://youtube.com/shorts/kCviHQFpV...qh3ImGBnGSmbch

It’s been an extremely difficult 24 hours. While I’m far enough away from the fires to not be directly affected, I can still taste the smoke when I walk outside. Ash is covering my house, my car. A large ash debris was in my backyard. I looked at it with my daughter this afternoon, and we determined it was what appeared to be a piece of paper from a car lease. It probably traveled 15 miles or so in the 60-70mph wind gusts from the Palisades.

The city of LA is very small in many ways. People know people in the many different communities. I have many friends in Pacific Palisades, having lived there for a long time. The town is burned to the ground. It is awful. It looks like a war zone. My heart breaks for them, for everyone affected.

The evacuations saved lives, thankfully, but it didn’t save homes. I know too many who have lost their homes. They are alive, and that’s a blessing. The house I lived in while in the Palisades burned down. It’s a gut wrenching time for the entire community.

The news cycle will move on in a few days, but please don’t lose sight of the devastation. Landmarks, places of worship, institutions, schools, businesses, homes, parks -- all are gone in a matter of hours. It’s hard to fathom. And it will take years, decades even, to rebuild completely. May those affected find strength.

On the local news, I saw an older gentleman interviewed by a news reporter on the ground in the Eaton fire, near Pasadena. His eyes were red, swollen from crying. As he stood in front of his home, which was burned to the ground as seen on TV, he stoically said he had been in the home for over 60 years, raised his family there. Everything he owns was in that house. He spoke in a composed way, but clearly was wrecked. And yet he said, loosely quoted, “But I’m tough. I will rebuild. I will start over. I’m 91, and I will start over.”

Lastly, I have a friend from my town who is a fire fighter. He and his fellow first responders were called in to fight the fires. They are true heroes. The work they are doing, the danger they walk into, and not run away from, is so hard to comprehend. I am grateful to all of them. They were called in around noon yesterday, worked all day and night, and he said earlier today they were going back out for another 24-hours of eating smoke, getting after it. God speed, my friend. May you and your fellow team be safe. And thank you.
