Moonwatch vs 2024 FOiS

Now that the initial excitement of the FOiS’s release has passed, I decided to go have a fun afternoon trying on Speedmasters.

I want one, but I want to be sure I can wear it with suits to work without being self conscious (like I am with a Rolex diver).

I thought I knew which I prefer. Now I’m not so sure.

What do you say, TRF?

Here you go. Both watches on my wrist worn on different occasions. They wear pretty similarly. The photos are at slightly different angles.

FOIS for me every day over the Moonwatch. But it’s personal preference as I much prefer the straight lug speedies

I really like the case but not the dial.

Just personal preference. I prefer the sunburst dial with a bit of patina over the sterile and matt professional dial (albeit the 3861 is for sure easier to read on occasions).

For me the FOIS overall feels more special than the pro.

That said, I do like the white pro a lot, and would be a harder choice for me if that vs the FOIS.

FOIS
Worn mine about 3 times as much as the new white dial moonwatch since I have had both, if that's any sort of guide, and I do love the moonwatch as well! I also have a black dial 1861 and it hasn't had a look in since these newly released models were bought in 2024. I do find the clasp clunky so that may be why.
Good luck and remember the chase is the best bit so enjoy every second!

Put the 1861 on a (brown) leather strap with a deployant clasp. Thank me later!

OP, same advice- get both the bracelet and a leather strap/deployant clasp (whichever one you pick)!

I'd go for the OG Professional. The only thing I prefer on the FOIS is the crystal

I've tried the FOIS twice now and concluded that the dial color doesn't work for me (it looks better in pictures than in reality imo). The faux patina also doesn't appeal to me either. However I do love the size.

Hence its the "classic" 3861 for me

Fois too reflective although I prefer the form factor. White speedie for the win. 321 ss reigns supreme

Original Speedy for me. I personally do not like the color on the FOIS.

If it's just one I personally would pick the professional case and not a straight lug/fois case....but that's a personal decision. So my pick would be the 3861 moonwatch in sapphire..... If you're really just buying and only having one in the collection.

My preference between these two is the Moonwatch.

A classic Speedy that never goes out of style

I went through this same exercise. Although without the benefit of handling both. I have seen enough pictures that lead me to believe the FOIS may have some legibility issues in certain lighting or angle to lighting. I went sapphire sandwich Speedy, but added the bracelet from the current 57.

Because pictures are awesome. Full disclosure, the 57 bracelet is not perfect, perfect fit. Its almost perfect. The difference is so small it did not matter to me. That little corner sticking up at the end link is maybe 1/2 mm, maybe less.

You could alternatively use the bracelet that came on the Apollo 11 speedmaster I think.

But in your case, I think it looks good with the 57 bracelet. One of my main issues with the speedy pro is I don’t like the new bracelet at all (I know I am likely in the minority)

For comparison, this is the end ink from a much more nasty than I realized SkyDweller. Fitment is not really any different.

Is there any movement where the springbars insert? or though the endlinks?
Or where the endlinks meet the inside of the lugs?

Got it straight from my AD, which is remote from me. They put in on and shipped me the set.

The end links fit solid, no wiggle, no slop. It’s a nice setup.

Classic and iconic for a reason. Thanks for the comment, Brian.

Interesting thought on the bracelet swap.

For the FOiS, the legibility isn’t a huge issue for me. A flick of the wrist and it’s ok.

Overall, though, I was surprised by how the Moonwatch felt overall more premium to me, between the bracelet, sculpted lugs and a tad bit more refined dial. That being said, the FOiS has an undeniable vintage charm that is perhaps a bit more sleek on the wrist.

Hi William, thanks for your post. As both have the 3861 movement, I’m guessing you meant the Moonwatch.

While I would choose the Moonwatch, the FOIS is undeniably impressive. The sapphire crystal of the new FOIS is very successful, it gives you that Hesalite charm. The Moonwatch is an icon and is represented in countless collections. The FOIS also installed the 3861 movement, although it cannot be seen. The bracelet of the FOIS and the shape of the case make it a very elegant chronograph. The gray blue dial is stunning. Maybe the "patina" is a little too dark. I was able to look at the FOIS in an Omega boutique and I really liked it straight away.

I've had the Moonwatch Hesalit for about three years and don't necessarily "need" the FOIS.

Have fun with your choice!

While I think the FOIS is attractive and respectful of its origins, does anyone else have problems with the hands and the asymmetry of the lume? The way the lume is applied to the minute vs the hour hand looks completely mismatched.

If this wasn’t the case I might consider one. Already having the 3861 Sapphire Sandwich and the 321 EW make it hard to add another unless it is perfect!

As an owner of the FOiS, you know what I’m going to say.
Since purchase, it’s taken most of my wrist time and I love the way the dial has different shades of colors.
Omega did a great job with this piece from the movement to the crystal to the dial to the bracelet.

I’ll also add, all things being equal, I would rather see the movement than not.
