Which Daytona OF?

I’m considering adding an oyster flex to my Pepsi (jubilee) and Royal Oak Chrono collection. I’m between the Ghost (silver dial with black subdials) or the baby Le Mans (black dial with silver subdials). I think they are both different enough from my AP that either work, but curious to see TRF’s preferences.

While the Ghost is generally more popular, the baby Le Mans is very appealing because of the sun brushed black dial. I think the sun brushed black dial gives the watch a little more visual interest. That said, I also really like the balance of the Ghost with the black sub dials, black ceramic bezel, and black strap all matching nicely.

Which do you pick to add to my current collection?

On Oysterflex, the black dial for sure. To my eyes, it’s a more coherent piece. Good luck with your choice!

I have both in the family and absolutely wear the black dial way more often than the ghost

I think the Ghost. It’s one of, if not the best Daytona in the catalogue. I’d love to have both, but if choosing one only, I’d go Ghost.

The black dial appears to be more legible to my eye. So I voted black.

Have the black, hope to be adding the steel dial soon…

I don’t think you can go wrong with any. Both are such special watches, it is akin to picking your left or right hand….

I much prefer the sunburst silver dial on the Ghost. Better contrast for me than the Baby LM.

None - Rolex has gone over the line with PM pricing. I’m done with PM pieces, especially Daytonas.

Wow I see what you mean.

I have not been in market for any Rolex recently, mainly due to releases. I haven’t been keeping track of pricing.

A WG Daytona is now 44k. GBP
The last WG Daytona I purchased with blue dial in 2017 was 27k GBP

I have absolutely no idea how that slipped my attention.

I paid 22k GBP for an OF steel dial in 2018. That’s now 33.5k - 6k more than full WG. Crazy.

Both pieces are amazing. I looked at both and went with the baby LeMans black dial. Most people seem to think it’s a solid black dial like the stainless steel Daytona, but you’re right that it is not so good to recognize that in advance. And yes, the sunburst black does give it a lot more personality in sunlight as well. So I had the opportunity to buy both, but the black dial with silver dials struck me as just a bit more cohesive and it flows better from the bracelet to the bezel to the dial and still plenty of contrast with the large silver subdials. I think the more black you have with this piece, the more the white gold case just pops. Anyhow, good luck with your decision and purchase; you’ll love either one.

I like them both, however as I have a lot of black-dialed watches, I think if I were to add a Daytona OF, it would have to be the Ghost, just to balance out my collection of watches.

Between the two, the black is more legible and dynamic to me. I agree with the comment above the recent price increase was over the line on these. But I doubt it will have any impact on sales.

Being that all of your pieces are either SS or WG, I'd go with something a little different like RG. A little more flash than WG, but less than YG. I think it would go with your skin tone well. I have two RG pieces now and much prefer them over my SS watches. Food for thought.

I agree with Dave O. You need some color in your collection. You already have a SS chronograph in the AP. Get the rose gold as it’s the perfect amount of loudness. Not too much but not too little.

If it were me though I’d go yellow gold. It definitely is the loudest but damn is it good. The OF version really calms it down. I love mine.

Thank both. I’m going back and forth between WG and YG (RG doesn’t work for my skin tone) for the reasons you suggested (i.e., already have SS and no color in my collection) but I can’t decide which dial combo I prefer on YG. I really like the Pikachu/YML dial but I hate that the indices don’t have black surrounds like they did on the 11XXXX models. Those black indices pulled everything together for me. Because of that, I actually like the black dial with gold outline subdials. However, I’d much prefer full colored subdials like on the Pikachu, Ghost, Baby Le Mans. In addition, YG is a lot flashier, which goes both ways. On one hand, I want the added flash if I’m spending $40,000 on a watch. On the other hand, I don’t want unnecessary attention if I wear the watch to work or in any other situation where I wouldn’t want the attention. I tried on the older model Pikachu/YML and wasn’t terrribly impressed with how it felt on my wrist, however I much prefer the case of the 12XXXX so it’s not an accurate comparison.

If you want the added flash get something with bracelet and not WG.

Your 2nd watch - your stealth wealth watch, by definition, will not be flashy.

If you half do it you'll be half happy

I’m not sure I’m following this. I don’t want the full bracelet. I like the durability of the ceramic bezel and OF strap so a full gold bezel and full gold bracelet don’t make any sense.

This would be my third watch as I already have the Pepsi and Royal Oak as shown above. In addition, I’m not specifically buying it as a stealth wealth watch, although I’m not opposed to that being an added benefit.

I had the 116 and now the 126. Honestly the black indices of the 116 are nice but I prefer the gold slimmer ones in the 126. It’s a much cleaner look and with the new slimmer bezel. The 116 photographs better buf the glide lock to me is the game changer. The yml is a modern version of the 6263.

The YG is just the right amount of flash as the OF tones it down. I wear mine in any situations. Never had any issues of feeling unsafe. The Wg and RG will get noticed too. It’s a Daytona. The ghost and lemans are probably the most recognizable Daytona OF on the market. The YML is arguably the hardest to get on the OF so you will see less of them in the wild.

I do think the 116518 looks better due to the black indices. The new one lacks that little contrast in that area, but the new clasp with the Glidelock is a MASSIVE improvement. I can’t state this enough. The 116518 requires exact fit of the OF strap to get a comfortable wearing experience , and for some that might be a little tricky. The 126519 so far has been incredibly comfortable to wear thanks to the clasp improvement.

I bought the 519 for the reason being that I wanted an OF Daytona wearing experience but without the flashiness of the 518. And so far it has been exactly that.

Based on your collection, either one will fit the bill. Perhaps YG may give you more variety, considering you already have 2 SS watches.

Both! - I went with the black dial first but the steel dial is next for me and already requested it. My AD thinks its redundant and asked if I wanted the yellow gold but I like the stealth look and don't mind the redundancy. Love both so much.
