Teacher with a Rolex?

I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but I want feedback anyway. I'm SO close to pulling the trigger on a Explorer II 16570, but two things are holding me back.

1. I would need to trade in my Tudor Black Bay Blue ETA which I love and had some sentimental value because I bought it for myself as a gift for becoming a dad.

2. I'm a teacher (and hopefully soon an administrator). I have the cash -well, not enough that I can buy it without trading the BB, but I worry it will look weird to wear a Rolex every day to a public school. Sometimes kids ask if the BB is a Rolex and I explain the relationship, but mostly it flies under the radar.

Be honest, if you met your kids teacher at parent night and he was wearing a Rolex, would it look weird? What about a Vice Principal?

Please - TALK ME OUT OF SPENDING ANOTHER $4K!!!!

Buy the watch you want if you can. Don’t let the fear of other people’s perceptions dictate how you live your life.

Depends if my school taxes keep going up every year and music and other programs keep getting cut. There is reality and the “optics” of reality with wearing a Rolex in certain jobs.

You deserve a nice watch and the finer things in life much more than most professionals. You are doing an exceptional service and I wouldn't think twice. If my kids teachers wore a Rolex we would probably be best friends by now. Lol! In all seriousness - go for it. My wife is a teacher and deserves a Rolex more than i do.

If I saw you on TV picketing over wages and carrying on, it would be one thing, but it sounds like you have a good understanding of your own finances (you acknowledge you have to sacrifice one for the other), so I’d say go for it. Good luck moving into admin and we await the “incoming.”

You will have to look long and hard to find a parent who will know what kind of watch you are wearing, regardless of what it is.

The haircut lady at my local shop that charges $10-$15 for a haircut wears a rolex. I don’t know, nor, care how she got it. It looks great.

You should do it if you want it.

Buy it! Then when they ask if it’s a Rolex, you can say if you stay in school, you can get a Rolex too!

The BB means a lot to you - Don’t sell the BB - you’ll regret it and end up buying one again

Make it work another way

And get that explorer

Yeah, that was my thought. The district is interesting - mix of all kinds of people, but we are generally well funded. We get 2% raises every year without much fuss and muss between the union and district. Pay is good, but it's a little lower than the surrounding districts.

Like the other educator said, I'm probably overthinking it. The kids will just think I'm "baller" ...lol.

To some a Movado would look booshie. Who cares? How do they know you bought it and it wasn’t gifted to you by a loved one? I’d go for it! Can always buy a seiko or Apple Watch if it gets uncomfortable!

To your first question. The explorer is a much better heirloom piece and will over years of memories will be a great price of sentiment. I wouldn’t hold a watch if your desires lie somewhere else unless you can comfortably add without selling.

I 100% support this move considering your concerns.

I am totally for you getting one. Most of the kids won't even notice and if they do, who cares?

Maybe some will want to go into teaching...

Depends on what kind of school district we’re talking about. Is it inner city poor? Or suburban middle class. If the later then I would say definitely do it. If anything people will respect you more cause it’s not easy pulling it off on a teachers salary. I respect you now too just hearing the story.

I experienced a similar situation when I was in high school, the principal had a BMW three series. None of the teachers had nice cars all the typical Hondas and Toyotas and cheap Chevrolets and Fords. Only the principal had a German car, and a BMW at that. I remember all the students thought the principal must have done something right to be able to afford a BMW, people actually respected him more. I don’t know what the parents thought about it. But now as a parent, if I went into a teacher/administrator’s office and he was sporting a nice watch, honestly, I’d be impressed, and I would like it and probably respect him even more.

So as others have said, do what you want and don’t worry about it (unless you’re in that inner city poor school where you have to worry about safety). Good luck

These threads kill me... buy it who cares what anyone thinks, kids included.

I don’t think I’ve seen one thread in the Patek forums where a member is asking if I wear this nautilus will my employer or other individual look at me differently.

Whether you are a teacher is irrelevant, everyone knows teachers are underpaid, if you want the watch get it. It’s an upgrade from the BB.

People don't know anything about you. I had a science teacher in HS who had gotten rich trading stocks, taught science because he liked it. His lifestyle was well above a teachers salary and no on cared because he was teaching for the love of it.

There are very few people here who will deter you from spending another $4K on such a worthy piece!

My vote is for holding out a bit until you’re comfortable picking up a second. You know it would be great to wear that explorer mon-thu and then your Tudor on Fridays with your jeans!

Rock it and enjoy it! You wont be the only teacher wearing an explorer
