Would you rock this as a daily beater?

My current daily is a DJ41 Blue stick dial/fluted bezel/jubilee bracelet.

I have been thiking about getting a less flashy watch, one where I don't have to worry about picking up scratches too much. Yes, i guess I would classify myself as one of those Rolex owners where the watch wears the owner, not the other way around.

Since many people love their GShock watches, I started shopping there and ran across a video that featured this watch. Here on the Gshock website:
https://www.gshock.com/watches/limit...n/gmwb5000tr-9

Yeah it's kinda flashy, and at 1700 bucks not exactly cheap for a digital watch, but I love the fact that it's titanium and the different colors on the band look cool. And yeah, lots of polished surfaces which no doubt will attract scratches. This is actually a titanium alloy that's harder than just titanium which enables it to be polished to a mirror finish.

I gotta find one one of these and check it out in real life.

Would you rock this thing as a daily, and would you pay 1700 dollars for a Casio??

All opinions welcome!

Personally no. I wear a 41 Sub as a daily, but if I know I’ll be doing repair, hard work or something similar I use a $150 GShock. Yesterday I bought a Sinn U50 for that role.

Dont know how long you have had the DJ 41 (or what you do for work), but the Jubilee bracelet and fluted bezel are not very prone to scratches vs. oyster and smooth.

I like the all black but for $1650 there’s just no way I can spend that on a digital. I’d get a Hamilton khaki field watch or similar for that money. If I really wanted a g-shock I’d get one for under $500 that’s just as durable, if not as cool looking.

I have had my DJ41 since February of this year. I work in IT.

I like things that are different, I like that they Titanium alloy is hypoallergenic since I have sensitive skin, it looks different, it will be light yet strong, and...in case I haven't mentioned it before, because it's different. I also don't like just wearing a big glob of rubber on my wrist.

Apparently the G Shock afficinados are saying this watch, being supposedly limited (out of stock on their own site) might actually be worth something in the future. Not that I care about value retention of a digital japanese watch, still cool to know I susppose. I will have a look around and see how it feels in person......if you see an "incoming" post from me, you know what happened.

No, I would def not rock it and most certainly wouldn't pay over $1000 for it. If you must get digital, get one for less than $500.

I vote for Hamilton at the $1500 range!

Or pay a little more and get the Tudor Pelagos! = )

Theres a lively market for limited G Shocks and Mr G's, so I could argue that paying $1200 over the cost of a regular metal G is not as insane as paying $25k+ over the MSRP of a Daytona. One of those is less likely to lose you a silly amount of money....

I'm not sold on the multi color band- I'd go with an all steel or maybe this if I wanted some color:

Wouldn't. Nothing wrong with a G-Shock but not for that kind of money.

A Gshock for everyday? yes. That one, no. Too much going on there for that to work with everything everyday for me. But there are several titanium squares I certainly would. .

I tried the Pelagos and it didn't do it for me. For some reason I miss the 80s and have a hankering for a digital watch.

I’d also suggest that Garmin makes a few models that can compete with gshock on durability but give you more features. Especially the tactix delta and fenix lines. Unless you’re a delta force sniper taking your shot mid HALO the Tactix Delta line is a little over kill.

As someone who wore a G-shock everyday when on active duty- I would probably get the titanium at most. Too much happening with that color-way.

The fiddly little buttons make these watches all but useless to me. Even the ones that are synced to the phone. They all wind up in a drawer.

The jubilee bracelet on your DJ41 is perfect for everyday wear and shows less scratches than an oyster bracelet FWIW

That's very true, noticed that with my Sub and Rootbeer! However, there's still the polished center of the clasp.

Would you rock this as a daily beater?

I certainly would not pay $1700 for it. I would rather wear the plastic version for $150.

Agreed

There’s not much you can do about the clasp, but I’d argue that it’s probably the easiest and least expensive part to replace. A light polish at service will also do the trick nicely.

I have a G-shock for when some hard physical labour is required. Other than that they are not really refined and it shows if you have a closer look.
Doesn’t satisfy me for a daily wearer.

Scratches don’t bother me. Normal swirls and scratches cannot be avoided so no need to get upset about it.

I am a fan of the G-Shock and have acquired a dozen or so over the years. They are sturdy and do the job. I will never pay more than $300-$600 for one though as there are so many great choices in that range. I like some of the new titanium models but when I see the price I just laugh and move on. Buy what you like and wear it.

Find yourself a nice Rolex 16610 or 16600 and spend $10k plus $1000 for a complete service on it. You can wear it every day and in 10 years it'll be worth $20K. In 10 years your Casio will be worth $0.

I have a $150 GShock as a watch I wear at a part time entry level job at the airport. It is a hellava watch to beat the crap out of and not worry about. Easy to read time and date which I need quickly and easily. My daily every other time is a WG Sub but just going to wear it on the ramp.

If going to that price range maybe a seiko SPB143 would be worth considering?

Unless you are really into g-shocks then there are a lot of great options in $100-200 range that would fulfil the remit.

Garmin is a great choice too if you want some sports functionality on top.

I probably won't wear that as a daily if I am looking for something that's "less flashy". But I would definitely wear it on "flashy weekends". haha

I think metal square are awesome watch. I wear mine plenty. And there are plenty of scratches on the older one to show.

But for your case, if you want to look for something less flashy, functional and tough, I would shop for a MRG-B1000. They are smaller (mid-size), full titanium, and you have Grand Seiko like case finish.

https://www.gshock.com/watches/mr-g/mrgb1000d-1a

They can be found around your price range if you look around for a used one. MRG worths their money (for the quality of the case work).
