I do see the concern. But no!

Glacier blue is a vibrant and bright shade of a beautiful baby blue. Carolina Blue, on the other hand, is a made up name to describe a distinctly dull and unimaginative mess of a color, befitting only of its basketball team and other sorry sports programs. There is no confusing these two very different shades. Buy with confidence... GTHC... And Go DUKE!

I didn't expect to make money and I think the 40k asking on some is absurd, but its odd that there's a multi year wait list but you'd struggle to get 50% after a year unworn.
@sgrossma broke it down rather nicely. So nothing more to add on the front of "what is the true value of a Czapek..."

I would, however, like to point out that the watchbox may have actually done you a huge solid by "setting the value" of your asset at $14k. Not to make light of your divorce, I've been through it too, but if you took a Czapek at "$14K" in the division of assets, you came out ahead on that one. Take the wins where you can!

I didn't want to turn a profit but there's certain circumstances in life that require you to sell assets. In the end the Czapek remained.

Sorry didn’t mean any offense. I was surprised about the question on what’s the difference between the two brands. Apples and oranges as others have said. FPJ is unique and even then it took about 25 years for his watches to have any resale value so yeah not particularly surprised about the offer you got on your Czapek.

All fair points, the watches remained .. a house and a vehicle went instead. I was just surprised given the momentum Czapek seems to have. The 14k valuation wasn't accepted by the lawyers anyways and in the big picture it was small potatoes but figured I'd trim the watch and car collection to save other assets. They are definitely nicely built watches, very slim and delicate after a Rolex

Small potatoes perhaps... But I will say this: I liquidated several assets in my D as well. In retrospect, however, my Pepsi GMT 2 with faded bezel that I bought for $3,300 at a San Francisco pawn shop on Market street (actually liquidated at small profit) was the most painful to lose. Not to mention, I paid 3x to reacquire it years later.

Czapek preservation is a win

Agreed I have an attachment to my watches... I know I'd regret selling the Czapek. I always think I could then I wind it and wear it for a day then realize how much I love it. It really is a beautiful watch. I still look at the movement every time before I put it on. I don't do that with my Pateks

That said I miss my LP640 roadster every day

Well, it’s quite surprising to me such low evaluation from Watchbox. They are serious, and it’s right that they lower the purchase price to preserve their margin, but the factual fair evaluation of Antarctiques in secondary mkt / auctions (based on numerous occurred trades) is much higher than 14 k.
Of course, the easiest and fastest way to monetize, often goes with a penalization of the price.
Bottom line, the key point is the one you mentioned: Antarctique is a definitely nice built watch … so good it still stays in your hands!

I would be curious if they change hands through chrono.. seems the same watches are on there for a long time. Granted the asks are crazy high. Either way.... glad to still have it

It’s hard to sell anything right now. Patek, AP,, Journe you name it. Liquidity is much lower than the last 3 years. With a niche product like czapek it would take some time to find a buyer no doubt if it’s anything like my experience trying to move my parmigiani Tonda pf micro.

I have no interest in selling my Czapek. And I frankly think that's one of the reasons for the secondary market cloudiness.

There is simply not enough Czapeks in circulation to have a good peg on the secondary value. There is also not a lot of people who even know about Czapek. Both are perfectly okay situations if you ask me.

It's hard to price something where there is essentially no market for the watch. When I say "no market" I mean there is just a dearth of volume to accurately gauge a cost. I think this is more a function of people holding onto their Czapeks than trying to sell them or actively trying to offload them.

An ice blue sold on either watchcollecting.com or Loupe this for about 5-7K over retail I seem to remember which is probably a fair estimate of real market value. People felt it sold too low at the time but that's what the market paid.....!

I had a pretty remarkable experience today. My local dealer is Jeremy Oster in Denver. Even though Boulder is only about 40 minutes away, I've been so busy that I haven't been able to visit with much regularity. I ordered an Antartique last year from him based on my internet research, but had never really seen a Czapek in person. In his shop, amongst other treasures, he had his own blue panda Cracovie, and one of the new generation Quai de Bergues (Emerald). My glacier blue had not been delivered, but he had one unit left of 20 of a special run he had done of an Antartique with silver stairway to heaven dial and blued steel hands and marker accents. I was frankly blown away by all three Czapek models. The Antartique was beyond my expectations when examined in person, and I purchased his limited edition which I favor over the light blue (reminds me of the Secret Alloy Cracovie, which I love). My basic message is that this company's designs are quite remarkable. I think any fears that this company is going to fade as more units are delivered are misplaced. I now want to get my hands on the new sapphire Quai de Bergues
FYI, Jeremy is the real deal re a shop owner with knowledge, service, and integrity. He has an excellent podcast called Keeping Time that is will worth a listen. He interviews many of the key players in the independent watch industry, and provided keen insights into collecting. There are at least two past episodes with Xavier, and new one will be upcoming soon.

Yes that's right i recall that one, but i do think all markets were healthier then, i believe the buyer in that case would have had to also add 6% fees on top.

Chrono24 is the opposite in that the seller has to deduct 6.5% from the price obtained.

Regarding some of the points about the current market. I'm following it closely as I have an Antarctique on C24 just now. I'm pretty sure I saw 2 appear for sale from watchbox a couple of weeks ago and one sold quickly and from what I can deduce trade sales are selling, but private sales are struggling. I have had 4 offers, one of which was ridiculous and obviously not a serious offer. The others have been from out side the UK.

But there is interest in the watch and I am seeing them sell; what did they sell for is another matter, but deals are being done.

Yes Jeremy is all class. A reminder of what service should feel like on a luxury purchase.
