Trading DJ 41 for a Daytona Panda?

Hey everyone!
Recently had a health scare and will have to start life long medication for auto immune disease. So I'm looking to upgrade while life is short!

Getting close to getting a Panda (grey market)
I've been wanting it for 3 years now. Its the watch that made me really interested in collecting. I just don't see me ever getting the call for iit at retail. I currently own a batman oyster and dj 41 tt (2021) both at retail.

I was thinking of keeping the batman and then trading in the the DJ 41 +19k -20k for the Panda. Do you guys think I'll regret it? An extra 20k is a pretty hefty hunk of change for a stainless steel daytona.
I could also just sell my DJ and cash out (I mostly wear my gmt nowadays)

I don't want a sub/ alrdy have a gmt
So that leaves me with a skydweller/old president/ Panda/
Anything else I'm missing in the 20-30k value range?

Really appreciate the wisdom on this forum! Thanks gang

Side note: Im moving to NYC soon - would wearing a Panda around manhattan/subway be a terrible idea? I've been here for 2 months and my batman goes very under the radar so far.

You have a great one in the BLNR already. I would suggest selling the DJ privately on this forum and using the money for an amazing trip
somewhere. Like you said, life is short.

If you stick to the plan of getting a Daytona, I’d suggest stretching and get the 116519. I know that is more money and that is an issue but it’s a much more substantial of a watch than the 500.

If you have your heart set on a Daytona and feel you can afford it, I wouldn’t hesitate for a second. Move the DJ and get the watch that you’ve always wanted. As long as you get fair values on the watches you won’t have an regrets.

I'm sure your batboy watch doesn't go as far under the radar as you think. The average person might not see it but enthusiasts and bad actors certainly see it. I wear my 116500LN in Manhattan when I'm there but that's not a panda so I don't know about a prescious metal Daytona. I insure my watches and wear them.

I say you go for it. You can find Datejust easier than trying to find the Panda if you wanted to get another. The Daytona with a ceramic bezel is such a great reference. Do what makes you happy. One caveat......When you attain your desired watch, there will always be another the begins to catch your fancy.

How about a white gold Daytona? Easier to get from an AD and for almost the same outlay.

Go for it and get the one you really want. No one regrets a SS Daytona.

LOL no Enjoy your DJ and explore other brands. The Daytona is a tool for Rolex to sell non desirable models. They dangle the potential of owning one at retail once youve bought enough two tones and PM's that they deems appropraite. Your not going to get one at retail. Which you've resided to accepting. Do not pay the egregious mark up from the grey's. All in all, its just a chronograph. Zenith, Omega and IWC make some amazing chrono's. Take a ride to a few AD's and try on a few. You would be pleasantly surprised how amazing other watch brands are. I love Rolex and it would be super cool to own a Daytona myself. Buy sometimes you need to accept reality and move on. Save your hard earned money and try on a few chrono's in the coming months. Good luck

I think this is great advice for someone that’s on the fence about rolex vs another brand.

I think this is terrible advice for someone that has their heart truly set on a Daytona. Nothing else will ever truly suffice and ultimately you’ll end up losing money on off brand watches that don’t truly fill the void.

Also you’re not losing your hard earned money unless you believe the value at which you paid will drop significantly, which i know is bringing the investment conversation into the mix. Which I’m not trying to do, but the point is even if the value does drop, it will never drop to zero. Worst case within a couple years you lose a few thousand. Many here spend that much annually on cigars. Best case it holds value and continues to appreciate.

Either way, life is short as the OP clearly points out. Get what you truly love.

The same way I would never tell someone to buy a Daytona cause of hype, I would never advise someone against it because of hype. Just do your homework and settle on a fair price.

1) really this depends on your finances. If u can do it, then it’s a big YES!!! Sell that DJ and don’t look back
2) the BLNR and white 500 is a GREAT combo. BLNR screams Rolex more than the SS Tona does.
3) i ve owned a SS white dial for almost 6 years and its close to perfect.
4) yes life can be short so go get that Daytona!!!!

Wow that's really good advice that's what I'll do. I'll insure it and if something bad ever happens atleast it'll be covered.

Do you guys know how to get the appraisal sheet if I'm getting the watch from the grey market ? I setup a hodinkee insurance account in preparation and it asked for it. I know typically I'd just get it from authorized dealer but wb for grey purchase?

To me the SS White Daytona equals the hype. It's a great fit on the the wrist and could work as the only watch you need. Go for it.

Do it. Personally I love my DJ, but if you aren’t using it and your heart is set then absolutely do.

I'm gonna insure my watch because of this. Thanks for the tip! It'll give me a better peace of mind over the years and I can wear it out.

Do you guys know appraisals work from Grey market purchase? I was setting up a hodinkee insurance account to see how it would work. I know authorized dealers would do it if you buy at retail but idk about Grey market.

Check jewelers mutual too before committing. Luckily I’ve never had to file a claim but I feel confident in them and their pricing (at least for me) was a lot lower than Hodinkee.

I like the online functionality better with Hodinkee, the JM website is a joke. Doesn’t appear to be updated in 10+ years. Anyway, as long as the pay up if the time comes, that’s basically what matters most.

Your DJ plus 20k is a good deal. White dial Ceramic Daytonas are over 34k now. This watch is amazing. Totally worth it. And I believe it’s better than the new one in terms of bold looks.
