I picked up my new GMTII today which needed to be sized. Two links had to be taken out which I assumed would be one from each side of the clasp, however when the guy came back he had taken both out of the same side. The clasp (and particularly the folded metal bit that extends beyond the clasp on the underside) seems to be centered so I assume its fine.

Is it normal to have 4 links one side of the clasp on 6 on the other?

My AD did the same thing when I bought mine earlier this year. I actually adjusted it myself to even it up. Didn't like the way it looked. If it doesn't bother you, no worries. :) Congrats on the new watch.

Genuine question: what would you do if someone said it was not normal?

I took out one from each side...dont have the watch in front of me right now but i think i have 5 on one side and 4 on the other. if the clasp is centered on your wrist and the watch head corresponds on the other side, you have it just right.

Ideally your bracelet should be adjusted so that the watch is centered on your wrist on top and the clasp is centered on the bottom. Links can be removed from from either side to accomplish this.

Take it back in and ask them to adjust it to 5 links per side to see how that compares. Thanks for the comments everybody.

All in personal preference and how you want it to sit on your wrist

We're all built a bit differently, but generally you would have more links on the 12 o'clock side than on the 6 o'clock side..

Only the newest bracelets allow you to go to 4 links on one side without having to remove a permanent link; so, as said, the set-up is normal if you have a small wrist. If you do not have a small wrist, then 5 links on the short side is normal.

You just need to play with it and see which way it fits better on your wrists as not all wrists are shaped the same.

The first time mine was adjusted, it was 6 and 4. I assumed this was a mistake and had it changed to 5-5. After a bit, I realized 6 and 4 was best for me and had it changed back.

x2. If you need 2 links removed than take them from the 6 o'clock side to centre the clasp.

I think what matters is that the watch is centered or sits the way you like on your wrist.

Most likely two links from the 6:00 o'clock side as you want the clasp centered on your wrist, and not cantilevered over the clasp hinge as in the middle photo (below). You want the link to fold where the clasp hinge ends, like in the top photo.

Thanks Sheldon, a very informative reply and a great link. I realised that the hinge had centred nicely but never thought about ensuring the end of the hinge sits in between links rather than mid-link. Makes perfect sense and sets my mind at rest that 6-4 is definitely best for me. Thanks again.
