I agree with Chewy, I'd go:
Sports/daily wearer-Subc/Patek Nautilus/Ap ROO
Dress-Lange/Patek 5960/IWC Port
Beater-Seiko diver/G-shock
All purpose-Panerai radiomir/Daytona

I like my current lineup:

GMTII: Everyday sports watch
Daytona: Business/Dress watch
G-Shock: Mainly for outdoors

Not really sure what my next one will be or where it will fit in....

I think a serious collector would want examples from each horological species rather than just one like Rolex.

But for most of us who are on TRF, it is Rolex that fulfills our watch desires. In that vein I think the "must" list would include (in any metal you like):

Sub (or YM for the sailing set)
DJ of any type
GMT of any type (even a Sky-Diddy)

The following are "should have":

Daytona
Explorer (I or II)
DD
Milgauss

It all depends on what that persons definition of a "collection" is.

There is no correct answer.

1. every day (submariner)
2. dress up (patek or anything classy on leather)
3. beater (tag heuer aquaracer or omega PO)

everything after that is just showing off your addiction

I have gone through an unbelievable ( even to me) amount of watches over the last nearly 30 years. Probably close to 300....
I've had Pateks/Omegas/Rolex, every brand apart from a Lange I would say. Here is my list.
Cartier Tank
Patek Calatrava - any 96/3796/5196
Omega Speedmaster/ on a strap!
Rolex Sub / Non Ceramic
Rolex GMT/ Non Ceramic.

I have substituted the GMT w an explorer II Polar, for variety in looks.

The speedy pro is a classic & my favorite chrono hands down, but the lack of water resistance, keeps me from adding it to my collection.

The 1 I have to add is a classic no date Sub, this is really the start of any collection imho......pure tool watch, 2 line please

Ps a Patek for dress is the cherry on top :-)

Yup... agree with this approach. Add an Exp II and you have my modest collection complete. I call it land, air, sea & space.

I agree with the Speedy choice but for me it has to be the original professional moonwatch.
