Inserts check (pics heavy)

Calling experts. Are these mid font mark III? They r not that fat but the fonts look good. Also can someone give a lecture about flat four insert? Thanks in advance.

I like the faded inserts you have pictured. Something about the flat four I do not care for.


But Anything but a service insert for me. I cringe every time I see a nice vintage watch with a shiny new thin font insert.

Thanks guys. As for the flat 4, I've seen it on some vintage pre-80's. The most obvious one is on the drsd dial article. It's the version 3 watch. It has the exact insert like mine. Is squat flat 4 like these original or service, or both?

the font is not thin but neither is it really fat, it has however turned a beautiful deep mahogany that is impossible to photograph. I believe it's an 80's service insert. When I bought the watch it came on an 80's 93150 bracelet. Putting 2 and 2 together points to both components being change during a service. Hope this shine some light for you!

I don't think it's impossible to photograph because you can see the nice brown color of it. Matches the strap nicely. Looks great

These are both early mk3 "soft 4" inserts. You'd find them on the early 1665 whites (mk1), for instance.



Something like a rail dial _should_ also commonly have a mk3, but a different variant. It would have a "hard 4" and the font would be pushed out to the edge of the insert outer ring (unlike what you see below).

You meant the top of the 40 has serifs, right? These have rounded tops. So rounded top early mark III n serif top late mark III. Safe? ;)

I've just read this thread with interest. Apologies for being naive, but all these dials are for Subs or Sea-Dwellers right? Did Rolex put the same dials on both these watches?

You meant inserts? Yes they r all interchangeable between 5512,5513,1680,1665.
