Care advice for a watch that won't be worn for years
Hi Guys
I have bought my 9 year old daughter a datejust (2012 model with the floral dial) The idea is that it is for her 21st birthday but wanted to buy now as I love that version and got a great deal on it. Should I leave it on a winder for 12 years and service a couple of times or just stick it in a safe and have it serviced prior to gifting it ?? I know there are a few guys out there with in depth knowledge of the movements and can advise me best - I am inclined to leave it Thanks for your help John

Freeze it 😂
I would keep it untouched and wind it every month.

Do not put watch on a machine winder all that's needed is a small manual wind once every couple of months or so, and perhaps turn the date over a few times but would have it serviced after 12 years storage. But in 12 years time will we be wearing watches I would give it to your daughter for her 18th birthday.

Could mummy not wear it and then hand it down to her make it a little more sentimental.
Not always an option I know just a thought that's all. |

Full wind 1-2 times a month, service prior to gifting. Then a lifetime of enjoyment.

Personally I would just put it into storage (not get it out every month) and then get it serviced after the 12 years

I see the point in winding it every few months but that is going to get old. Letting it set for the determined time and then getting it serviced before presentation should do nicely.

plus all seals are in tact at the moment so will (should) hold value better than being worn

I personally see no reason to get it serviced, and i would wait till she is 21.

![]() all good advice but personally, i see no point starting and adjusting every few months when it'll still need a once-over after over a decade in carbonite. giving her a rolex service card on a then vintage model will also be cool and she won't need to service it for 5 years min after its received. congrats again. ![]() |

I agree with neither but neglect seems different than a future "need".

![]() I would be hesitant to give any kid a Rolex at 18 and potentially heading off to college. That's a neat idea!

I would do nothing with it, and I bet it's fine when the time comes to giving it (not gifting it!) to your lucky daughter.

It'll be fine sitting in the safe. If you're going to have it serviced anyway, then I wouldn't mess with it. Unless you want to get it out and play with it.
And I agree with Peter. Consider giving it to her before her 21st birthday. Like maybe a HS graduation gift or something. |

Awesome gesture.
I considered this option (and had the same question as you) but decided on the wear it now and add sentimental value before handing over at 21. Congrats !! |

I am doing the same thing! I have a 16610 LV Sub that is BNIB sitting in my safe that I am planning to give to my son as a college graduation gift or wedding gift. I'm going to leave it alone and just plan to have it checked out before I give it to him.
