How much productivity are these surveys wasting

I've been actively trying to be very unproductive this last schoolweek before summer break. So far I'm succeeding.

Prior to my retirement, my organisation had Internet blocks on most external, and all social media sites. At times it was a nuisance when researching something for work.
If you strayed onto a site they considered doubtful you would get a "please explain".
Personal 'phones are of course impossible to control and I guess a lot of folks are using their 'phones not work computers. No good to me - too small and restricting.

Just had a change of jobs; new office is an open space environment - which means no cubicles and far less privacy. I'm sat in a corner, but next to the network printer, pantry, and exit to the restrooms. So yeah, a lot of traffic and I've learnt to stay off TRF!

My last company switched to open space in the head office (the staff called it romper room). Productivity fell off. People were more productive when they had some of their own space and weren't constantly distracted by the goings on elsewhere in the room, so we switched back to a conventional environment.

I shouldn't, but I find myself tuning in to other people's conversations. I can't help it! Perhaps instead of being productive, I spend more time now spacing out

Anyway, I'm told this open space concept has been around for 4 years now, so its unlikely they will change any time soon. Unless... someone comes up with some productivity metrics that can prove otherwise!

I'm not surprised by this. And I don't think it is just the distraction element. When I feel someone looking over my shoulder, even someone just walking past, I cannot work. Actually I often switch to another window to cover up my work so the supervision thing is counterproductive for me

The 'open-plan office' thing has been around for decades and every now and then someone "rediscovers" it and everybody has to be inconvenienced while they learn that it doesn't work very well in anything except factories and sweatshops.
I always worked much better in my own office and I thought it was crazy for management to lose their privacy as they were forever beating a path to the private interview/meeting rooms in order to discuss private/confidential stuff.

I'm glad I retired from the rat race and started working for myself, I am my own boss, I can now do what I want when I want. Its FAB!
