Servicing Advise Needed...

Hi all,

I've got a bit of a dilemma...I have a 16800 Matte dial that I'd like to get serviced. It has updated Luminova hands & newer date disc that were swapped out at an earlier servicing but other than that, all is original.

The watch runs beautifully (+1 second/day) but since I'm not the original owner, I have no idea when it was serviced last.

I called the BH RSC a few days ago and spoke to a lovely woman who was very nice...I told her what I had and she said servicing would run $550-$750...which seems about right.

I also took it into 2 local ADs this week and had their watchmakers give me an estimate...both watchmakers opened it up and both said it needs 2 automatic reversing gears in addition to the complete overhaul service. 1 AD quoted me $550 and the other $505 including the reversing gears.

Since this is a matte dial sub, I DO NOT want the dial or bezel insert swapped out...I trust that if I tell either of the AD watchmakers to leave those parts alone, they will but I'm a bit worried about the BH RSC...they may even refuse to service the watch unless I let them change the dial out due to the tritium. Also, I'm confident that both AD watchmakers can do just as good of job as the RSC...it's just the movement they're servicing...I don't want the outside of the watch touched as it's had quite a bit of polishing in it's past and doesn't need any more...

Here's the other thing, I really don't plan on keeping the watch for too much longer...I'd either like to sell it or trade it for something I like better like a 16613 or GMT. Should I invest in the servicing just to turn around and sell it or should I just consider that it needs servicing and adjust the asking price accordingly? I bought the watch with all boxes and accessories but no papers so it'd be nice to have some docs for it...watch is authentic of course but it always helps when selling.

Any advice would be so helpful...thanks.

If it is that accurate with little to no problems, I would just sell it and put the money into the watch you want.

You won't recover the $500 or so from servicing it now.

Service if you want to keep it, don't service it if you are going to sell.

Why don't you send it to the Independent Rolex Service Center in San Fran... They will do it however you want it done.... and it will have a 1 year RSC warrantly.

The standard flat rate for an overhaul is 550 bucks..plus parts.

Sell it and let the new owner decide what he or she wants.
