Daytona platinum vs two gold pieces

Building my collection, i went to my AD and they had a platinum daytona in the back. I like daytona's and the platona is the holy grail of them. Retail is 69.000 Euro. I really love the watch but spending that much money makes me wonder if i shouldn' t go with a white gold blue dial and another PM for that amount.
What do you guy's think?

I personally would prefer two gold piece over one platinum piece. I have the yellow gold Daytona and the gold blue Submariner. I have a couple other steel pieces to balance the collection.

I would go for a WG GMT and a gold DD instead of the single Daytona. I rather like the Platona but I wont buy one unless i had the cash to get all 3 at once. Its a lot of coin for one watch

It’s a lot of money I agree but honestly I don’t like to settle. If your mind is locked on a platona no other watch(es) will make you forget it.

Also, that heft of platinum cannot be replaced by any other watch.

Finally, I am no expert on secondary market values, but I see them climbing very much recently so probably your investment will be safe with the platona (unless huge recession hits the world) so why bother?

Went with WG Blue Daytona and WG BLRO GMT instead.

I have experienced the plat Daytona.
I loved the beauty of that very unique watch, but I became too aware how much money is on my wrist/collection/one watch. Even though it is full plat: still it is a Daytona—inside exactly the same watch as steel version. Also the weight: It is IMO too heavy—not that comfortable to wear.
You have two great steel watches—I would add one gold watch which sings to me the most and save the rest of the money for something else.
I ended up letting go the plat Daytona—not regretted the decision, enjoyed the experience though.
But:
If you truly feel that the plat Daytona is the Watch for you—go for it. You should get a good discount. If that would be the Watch for me: why not keeping only that one watch?

I don't think this is about "quality". It's exactly the same watch made from different materials. Pt rather than gold (whichever color) or steel. It depends how you define quality. You suggest that the Platona is better quality than a combo 116508 + DD?

Totally agree , plus the Daytona platinum is way overpriced, with this kind of money you should consider a Patek Philippe complication , like say the 5905P , platinum with 2 great complication, but as always been said do what make you happy.. Gd luck

Seems then that your definition of quality is how rare and expensive the material of the case and bracelet is, and not how well the watch is made (i.e. how accurate, how precise, how durable, etc). Which is fine but probably overly simplistic.

It's a lot of coin, esp when a couple of years ago you could have saved £10-15K. I'd probably favour the two pieces, but if it is truly a grail then accept no substitutes.

As an owner of multiple steel and gold Rolex watches and a Platona, I would take the Platona over multiple gold watches. It’s going to be a personal preference thing.

As others have mentioned, it’s a lot of money to tie up into one piece and I think that’s where I would struggle most.

Having said that I’ve never owned PM of any kind, but I’m the kind of guy that wants what I perceive to be the best, so in that regard, I think if I went PM it would have to be platinum

I would go with two gold pieces over one platona. But I’m not a huge fan of the platona to start with.

I think that would make for an extremely amazing 3 watch collection! I think when I pass on “grails” for more quantity, I always still end up thinking about the grail and it’s like the itch isn’t scratched.

I also think for that watch, the cost is not the price tag, but being wealthy enough to afford the depreciation hit of wearing it and the foregone future appreciation that some vintage rolexes can enjoy (which all tend to be in steel). Not saying one should buy based on that factor, but that if those issues will disrupt your ability to enjoy the watch, then maybe 2 gold is the way to go. Otherwise, platinum all the way!

In building a collection, you have to decide what you are going to collect. I don’t read where you’ve decided what you’re collecting? I understand that it includes Rolexes. But, does this watch even fit into your collection? Are you collecting all platinum watches? All versions of the Daytonas? One watch from each line? A collection isn’t just a random assortment of watches. What’s your goal?

A year ago I would have said two gold over platinum, any day of the week.

But, I'm not so sure today. It's not so much the quality vs. quantity argument, it's more about what makes you feel good when you strap it on and look at it. If you've got a watch you absolutely adore, then why do you need another one?

I’ve debated this myself in the past. I actually went both routes before I could ultimately decide. Now that I have the experience...I’d go with two PM pieces....ONLY IF, they were my only two watches.
With what you have...I’d grab the platona. To me it is that special, and I hate not having a date function, and i still think about this a lot...and this one is worth it.
I did add more PM pieces down the road, but knowing what I know now, if was was in your position...I’d get the Daytona now. Good luck.

Easy choice for me.
While the Platinum is an absolutely stunning watch, one of the most beautiful made, it was too heavy on my wrist when I tried it on.
I would much more prefer two PM watches to alternate and wear at my max weight comfort level.

Difficult choice! I would have chosen PT Daytona. It is the ultimate Rolex together with Pt DD and it commemorates 50th Ann of Daytona as well! It is gorgeous alive and pictures do not do it justice at all! And if you want the top of the best, chose baguette dial! That one is stunning!
