Somewhat true but if there were no consensus on great whiskeys you wouldn't see the prices we currently have.

I love the bourbons from Hillrock. Hard to find but amazing. Dave Pickerell runs the outfit. Solera aged.

The regular and the Cabernet barrel finished ones are the standouts.

Dave Pickerell died almost a year ago. Met him early in 2018. What a great guy. Talked bourbon a good 5min with me in passing. Definitely bourbon royalty.

Hillrock is pretty unique, I tried it once or twice in a bar. Dave Pickerell was the "Master Distiller" for a significant number of upstart distilleries after he left Maker's Mark, and usually had very little to do with them once he got them up and running. I think we can attribute a large part of the current craft distillery movement to his prowess and work with these new start-ups, but I don't think there is any transparency in calling him a craft distillery's Master Distiller when he isn't tightly involved in the day-to-day operations. They were really paying him for the use of his name after they got up and running. In all fairness, he was a consultant more than anything. That's not saying he didn't do some great things...

I know it's marketing hype, but is anyone else getting the new Lagavulin 11 years old (Nick Offerman edition)?

I love Lagavulin and enjoyed Nick Offerman in Parks & Rec and some of his books. So I'm definitely getting a bottle.

Uncorking this tonight to mark a milestone. My son started interviewing for residency.

I'm currently halfway through my bottle of Oban 14. Maybe I expected too much, but seeing the praise it gets I thought it would be excellent.
I would say it is actually a bit boring, just average fruity and woody notes with a slight bit of smoke. No depth, no lovely lingering finish/aftertaste.
Coming from various Islay malts and 25+ yo Highlands I might be spoiled with bold tastes... But I know I'm not getting this bottle again.

Have a bottle of Johnny Walker green for when my sons are "of age". It was the amazing value for money choice when I was of a certain age so I put some away for when they are too. For the price I honestly don't think there is a better dram. Spend 2,3,5,10x... sure, but for £30/$45, the original "no less than 15 year" blend is hard to beat

I enjoy Oban 14 mostly because of what you described! I can't handle the smokey campfire on the palate, but would say it's a good mix between some Highland and isle malts. MaCallan 12 is more of the boring malt to me, I need the 15 to get a little more oak/barrel flavor. I think the Oban hits a lot of qualities of what I look for and associate with a Scotch.

Of course, my go-to is pretty much any bourbon over Scotch, so I could be completely off base...

I attended a small event in March of last year that he attended for Hill Rock and Whistle Pig. He brought everything each distillery made respectively. Was great speaking with him and drinking his booze for free.

He claimed to be a descendant of Col EH Taylor. I had no idea he died. Didn’t seem ill, but certainly wasn’t a picture of health. Sad.

Anyhow, he at least set up the distilleries and got them off on the right foot. Some of the best bourbon around IMO so regardless, probably wasn’t an accident.

Slow. NC is state managed and the good stuff gets allocated to the largest markets. The problem is they are put into lotteries and everyone and their brother is in the lottery. Chances have become slim to none to get one at retail.

Unfortunately the same usually goes for those of us in non-lottery states, and in small markets, in general. Nevada's allocation of almost everything gets sucked up by Las Vegas, so good luck getting a BTAC or anything else remotely desirable where I'm at; and I'm in the 2nd largest area (Reno)! My local spot gets some stuff in every once in a while, usually after Vegas gets their first crack at whatever's out there. Last year he got two bottles of GTS (should have been 3 in a case, I thought...?), and was told that case of GTS was the only BTAC distributed in Northern Nevada.

So TLDR: It's tough everywhere, and it feels worse when those retailers getting an allocation charge secondary prices or, if they don't, the buyers of the bottles seem to just turn around and sell them for secondary profits. It's disheartening for those who actually want to drink the stuff inside the bottle...

I hear ya, NY/NJ isn't any better. Last year was invited to a lottery at a local store of Pappy and BTAC and I swear every one and their mother/sister/brother/grandma showed up and entered as well. There were families of kids, wife and cousins like 5-7 all signed up needless to say didn't win anything there.

Then my other connect at another store called me to say he got allocation of everything, excited I drove there only to find out he was charging secondary market prices

Well here's hopping this year will be better and I get lucky lol

Love me the M10!!! Always have a couple in the bunker! Let me know what you think of the makers. I passed on it since I have a store pick in the bunker and another private pick from my club on the way.

Now on to the EC18.... passed on one in NJ because he wanted $300 - about $95 over secondary...was working a deal on another EC18 for 200 and had it swept away from me because I had to jump to a meeting...nonetheless...it’s on my short list!

I haven’t uncorked the maker’s yet.
I picked up the EC18 for $175 at the local total wine. What a deal!

Ace spirits has Michters barrel strength rye on the website - about 90 each when you order 4. If you haven’t had this I HIGHLY recommended it!

Any of you guys former members of BSM on FB? They shut it down and now I am wondering where to trade and source bourbon.

I might just be a little too savage then, I love the smokiness

I tried Octomore 9.2 last week, it was like drinking Ardbeg or Laphroaig on steroids

Let’s do it!

I’m more than willing to set up a group chat on Facebook.

It could be very beneficial given that a lot of us are from different states / have access to different bottles. For example, I live in Ohio so finding Weller antique is a weekly thing - it’s unfortunate they just raised price to $50....
