5167 SS vs 5167 Gold
I own the 5167A and am toying with upgrading to the 5167 rose gold. Is this a good or bad idea?
All my watches have been SS, WG, or Platinum. But I like the look of the gold 5167. Will it scratch that much easier? Any other downsides? Thanks in advance. |

Aesthetically I prefer the 5167R over the A and adds a touch of class and elegance.
I prefer the 5164A over the 5164R though as it just looks more balanced in my eyes. Moneywise SS will retain value better but that should hopefully be a secondary consideration. Good luck in your decision! |

I have both stainless and rose gold and honestly love them both but prefer the rose gold/chocolate band. It really stands out indoors especially with dim lighting.

I’d say keep the A and pick yourself up the 5712r. It’s such a gorgeous piece

The look of the gold is attractive, and I don’t think there’s a wrong answer. That said, the steel version is the classic. I think the whole point of wearing a 5167 is that it’s a non-fussy, under-the-radar, casual piece. I’ve mentioned this before, that a guy like Paul McCartney wears it well. If he were to wear the gold version I think it would be much less subtle, thereby losing the nuance of understatement. But he’s just one example. Each wearer is different with a different style and vibe.

I prefer the lighter steel 5167 and extremely comfortable to wear. And price wise I think ss is better choice

Just my experience many years with ss and 18k gold what will dent or scratch gold will do the same in ss. Now slight tiny swirl marks yes gold will show .

When I think Aquanaut these days I mostly think 5167R. I like it better than the A which I tried on a few times and never fell in love with. No disrespect, and I know it sounds like heresy, but the A can appear a little bland depending on the circumstances.
It also depends on what else you have got. I asked myself if the A would add enough variety as I have another SS sports watch w black dial and white numerals. Between that IWC Mark XV and the 5711 blue, an additional 5167A would just not get much wrist time whereas an R would broaden the spectrum. |

I much prefer the look of the 5167r over the a. Much more pop on the wrist. The r has a dark brown/metallic sunburst effect which is really cool. The a is more under the radar so depends on the look you’re after.
As far as scratches, I wouldn’t worry too much since both a and r have a very thin profile. |

Personally, the steel model never did much for me. That watch in RG takes it to another level, more refined and elegant for sure.

If it's a daily beater, then steel would be my answer. I love the look of the R but to me, gold goes with leather, not rubber.

Thank you to all for your answers. I'll talk to my AD and see if I can order one. Still not sure if I will buy one.

Rose and chocolate are really nice together. I passed on one a while back and have since regretted that move.

Picked up an R on Monday and the chocolate/rose combo is just mesmerising.
The added weight also avoids the cheap feel of the standard steel Aquanaut IMHO. |

I owned the 5167R and it didn't do much for me. Soft metal, easily scratched and you lose the lightness and nimbleness of the aquanaut since RG is hefty.
If you are looking for something louder or with PM , there are plenty of options ranging from the RG Yachtmaster 40 on rubber, you could get a RG rootbeer and slap it on rubber. The 5164a also gives the aquanaut more heft and wrist presence. Oysterflex daytona also comes to mind - the ceramic bezel gives you adequate protection. I do think the 5164R might be the way to go - if you are going gold...damn that's a fine piece. |

If I had the steel one, I would probably add a rose yachtmaster.

Patek rose gold and the brown dial tones are so smooth I love the extra weight and it’s still very understated as not known by the masses Go for it |

Depends on where you will wear the watch. I loved traveling around the world wearing my SS 5167. Riding subways with a short sleeved shirt, no one notices the watch compared to a Rolex, for example.
A gold 5167 is a different story. I sure wouldn't wear it as much.
