Rolex, PP, ALS, FPJ - 6 categories, 6 grails

I’ve just completed my collection of 6 different grails in 6 different watch categories. It took me a bit to figure out which watch is the ultimate per category, still I'm not sure if this journey ever ends.

Here is are my votes with two constraints applying:
- I have a relatively small wrist (17cm; 6’7) - hence, nearly every watch > 40,5cm is off the list and also top heavy watches (as much as I love the Datograph) are out
- Although my selection is quite expensive, it’s still in a reasonable bracket, especially when applying retail prices - hence, vintage Patek Chronos, rare vintage Rolex pieces or complex FPJs are also off the list

Curious to receive some feedback and challenge on my selection per category and
whether I miss a certain category in general:
- Vintage Rolex: Explorer 1655 - Way cooler than any Sub or Daytona and the funky dial and fatty case make this an absolute stunner
- Modern Rolex: GMT 126710BLRO - Again, I'm not a huge fan of the Daytona (although the Zenith is quite slick), consequently, I've to go with a GMT here. Given blue / red is the traditional colour, the new Pepsi is my favourite. Since Philipp Dufour is also rocking that model this can't be completely off
- Chronograph: ALS 1815 - Best in class dial with the purest expression of a traditional chronograph movement that beats the 5070
or 5170 by far
- Three-hander dresswatch: FPJ CB - Unmatched quality and finishing for a watch considered sitting in the entry level segment and the different shades of blue are just mesmerizing
- SS sportswatch: PP 5712a - the 5711 is too clean for me for a sportswatch, the 5740 doesn’t come in SS and AP is not really a contenter from my point of view
- The watch that can do it all: ALS Odysseus SS - very controversial piece that sings to me more and more every day, which can be used very versatilely

I might add a seventh category to the mix in the future, which is complicated watches. My frontrunner at the moment is the PP 3940.

Wonderful 6 pack

Can you please comment on how the Lange wears for a 6.7. I am a touch smaller at 6.5 inches. I’m concerned with their long lugs (and now the integrated brac) that it won’t wear nicely on me. No boutique around me to try.

For instance, I owned the same 1815 as you. It was at the cusp of filling my entire wrist (top). The 38.5 moon phase 1 fits me better.

Very nicely curated collection (and categories). 2 watches overlap with my own collection, hoping to add a third overlapping watch sometime next year

For a complications category, the 3940 is definitely an excellent choice. However, only if you plan to actually wear it. Way too nice a watch to just sit in the case for special occasions.

I know you have the FPJ CB, but I think a true indie category could also make sense with e.g. something from Urban Jürgensen, Grönefeld or Rexhepi.

Finally, I belong to the group of people who believe that any well-rounded watch collection needs an Omega Speedmaster "Moon" (standard Hesalite or some vintage or special edition, e.g. the new Snoopy looks fun! )

Really cool collection out there !
Congrats !

What about a VC watch like an Overseas or even a Cornes de Vaches Chronographe.
I tried the ALS Lange 1 Moonphase Platinum: a beauty !

In any case, a really nice collection...with some fantastic piece...I am thinking on the FPJ CB that I didn’t bought years ago when I have had the opportunity...

That's a beautiful collection of well chosen pieces and I can't really fault it. I suppose one could argue that there are no white/silver dials or colored gold, but perhaps that's because you don't like them. And I agree that the 1815 is the finest pure chronograph made.

Well done! A little overlap with the two Rolex GMTs, but otherwise very diversified for a six watch collection of heavy hitters. Congrats!

Great job! All great choices, but would not have expected you to double up with langes or even rolexes for that matter. Give AP a chance!

It wears actually quite nicely on a smaller wrist. Since it's not that top heavy and the lugs aren't that pronounced as for the Chrono or Dato, it sits actually smoother than the Chrono at my wrist. So you should definitely try to get hold of one.

Nicely balanced collection! I'm with another poster above, time for something a bit quirky, a bit risky, maybe a piece you love, that you could potentially take a bath on if you tried to resell, but it doesn't matter as you'll hold onto it forever.

Or just get a rose gold AP RO perpetual calendar and call it a day

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.
My takeaway is that I double down on the 3940 and might add an indie brand to the mix (the Akrivia Chronomètre Contemporain is quite nice) sooner or later...

Cheers

This is a real nice collection here. Congrats.

I would add a Royal Oak Chrono or ideally Perpetual.
Or a Breguet 7137 or 7337 blue dial.
