What would you buy with a budget of $40,000?

I prefer white gold to rose or yellow as I suspect it attracts less attention.I typically wear a collared shirt with tie during the week and without tie on the weekend. I am pretty gentle on my watches. I am trying to decide between a WG oysterflex Daytona, a used Lange timezone or a Patek 5524G. I also like some of the other Lange watches and Pateks but need help trying to decide. Please share your thoughts. It seems I get bored with watches and am hoping one of these won’t bore me after a couple of months.

Of those choices, i would opt for the Lange TZ (or better yet, a regular L1). Weekend wear will favor the Rolex or PP, but those seem a bit out of place with more formal business attire, which you seemingly wear 5 days a week. Presumably you have other watches, including a casual piece for the weekends.

Funny enough, your taste mirrors mine. I have the WG OF Daytona, Lange 1 MP (TZ is too large) and considering the 7524g (smaller diam than 5524). The Lange 1 MP still wins for most interesting, but the WG OF is the ultimate everyday wearer. Not sure if the TZ will be interesting enough…the Lange 1 MP has the day/starry night and moonphase that makes it look different every time you look at it. Can’t go wrong with any of those choices though!

Does Lange 1 MP wear smaller than a Daytona?

My personal opinion is that the Daytona wears smaller. Slightly shorter lug to lug distance and the thicker/ceramic bezel and dial/sundial color helps it also appear smaller. The Lange 1 has straight lugs, thinner bezel…and my specific Lange 1 has a silver dial…so it appears slightly bigger than my WF OF. Wrist size is about 6.25”.

EDIT - OF band when sized appropriately makes the strap on either side of the watch flare out a bit. Try it on if you are able to find an exhibition piece!

Do you already have a steel Daytona? If so, I can't imagine purchasing the white gold Oyster Flex version, as it's basically the same watch in a PM case and a rubber strap. Regardless, I personally think a rubber strap on a gold watch is silly, especially with the attire you wear.

Based on how you dress, I'd go for a dressier watch. I don't personally like either of your Lange or Patek choices but, generally speaking, I think Lange is both higher quality and lower priced than Patek. I don't really like the Lange 1 but I'd go for the moonphase version of it over the Time Zone, which is my least favorite Lange 1.

If I were in your position and wanted a dressy watch under $40k, I'd get a VC Cornes de Vache in gold for a little over your price cap. If I didn't want to exceed it or wanted to avoid pink gold, I'd get the steel version.

I personally would go for the timezone but given you have a history of getting bored, I would go with the Daytona, if you end up having to sell it, you can get your money back..

1815 Annual Calendar (used), lots going on which may keep you interested. There seems to be little of real interest in Patek at that budget these days. One could think of the regulator, or perhaps 5205 (but I think those prices have really picked up from the low 30’s they were selling for a few years ago).

I don’t see how the Daytona or the PP Pilot works given that you are pretty dressed up M-F and so exploring the Lange and maybe PP options seems to make more sense.

I don’t particularly care for the Lange Timezone…. My vote would be for a Lange 1 MP or pre owned 1815 AC If under $40k

I would go 5k more and get a Sax annual calendar; this gets you the big date with full calendar function. Jay and JR16 suggest the 1815 AC; while this version allows for all indications to be updated with a single push button; I like the big date more than this feature. Also, my eyes are not too great and it’s hard for me to read the date on the circumference of a subdial.

Oh; one other difference is the 1815 AC is manual wind while the Sax AC is an auto.

Good luck!

Yes, at the end is 38.5mm.

Lange 1 MP is extremely balanced on wrist.

This was exactly my first thought! The OP is looking to go precious metal, so this might not work, but this is precisely the idea I had.

Personally, I would not be looking at Rolex at this price point. Now, like most everyone else, I ADORE Rolex. But to me, Rolex excels (dominates!) at the ~10K-15K price point - where you can get a fabulous, beautiful, and robust watch that you can put on and forget about and wear hard. For Rolex to get to price points above ~15K-20K, they add superfluous add-ones like precious metal (to a base sports watch) and diamonds, etc. If you love the aesthetic, then go for it, because they are still terrific!

But for me, once you get into the 20K range, my attentions decisively shift away from Rolex, to brands where you get more interesting complications, and better finishings, eg. ALS, Vacheron, H. Moser, Patek, and AP. And at 40K, now we’re getting into some really exciting options! My mind is a rush with Lange 1, Lange Annual Calendar, Patek 5227 (with hunters caseback), and things in the Vacheron historiques line - in particular that gorgeous Cornes de Vache in steel. IMHO, one of the best releases in the last five years and likely to grow in popularity as folks give VC more attention.

Good luck!

Have you tried all these on?

They all wear so much differently.

I have the YG OF - my favorite piece at the moment. I also have the SS Black Ceramic which can coexist with this piece but is getting very very little wrist time at the moment. If that trend continues it may go towards something that would get wrist time - been considering trying to get a Meteorite GMT.

I have a Lange 1 Moonphase in RG - I enjoy the strap variations and the piece is just incredible. Just a completely different feel compared to the Daytona.

Readability was my biggest complaint as well. I really wish they removed the “annual calendar”text so that the date could have it’s own subdial.

Two gold beauties! Hard for anyone to argue the Daytona can compete here but as per usual it’s a Daytona!

Couldn’t agree more. After $20k there are much more interesting options than Rolex. Below $20k Rolex is
