A local grey dealer had one of those in their window for a while. I thought it was pretty cool - something different, a bit like today's Air King. Don't think I've seen one in the wild.

My grandfather’s 1002. He purchased it in 1961, in Switzerland. Then he wore it all the time! I am honored to continue to wear it today!

Which rolex sparked your passion for the brand?

For me it it was the steel datejust 16030. Tried one on at a local jeweler and was hooked.

My dad's 11613. He's worn it every day for 30 years. Wish I could be a one watch guy like him.

Growing up in the 80s, the day date. All the BSDs had one on their wrists. JR Ewing! In my mind of a child, that’s how I measured the success of those adults at the time. Of course now that I’m older and (questionably) wiser, I understand that success in life is measured in numerous ways, not just on physical possessions.

However, I’m still hoping to acquire a 228239 sometime soon to check it off my bucket list and to celebrate some of the good fortune that I have been blessed with in my life. Eventually I would like to pass along my watches (and love of cars and pens) to my 2 boys. I’m like a little kid at Christmas sometimes, but I’m glad to have that spirit still inside of me.

I have a friend with a vintage solid yellow gold Daytona. She is very stylish and really makes it work. The weight is impressive.

I had skipped school to go to the horse racing at Windsor (UK), on a cold grey wet Monday afternoon. I was 11 years old and loved to watch the bookies working their magic. A customer had won and a bookmaker reached into the inside pocket of his jacket to get out a chunk of money, when he did I saw a brief flash of what turned out to be a Rolex Daydate Yellow Gold. I loved watches from a 5 year old boy and did not know what it was. I did my research by going around the watch shops and discovered Rolex. I said to myself as a young boy I would one day own a Daydate.

Fast forward 5 years, when I had just turned 16 I had saved enough money to buy a two tone datejust. I worked raking bunkers at the local golf club, had two paper rounds in the morning and one in the afternoon, plus a few other little sidelines. I did it though, £2040 from watches of Switzerland.

Fast forward to my early forties, and I managed to buy a Yellow Gold Daydate, strapping it on took me back to a 11 year old boy, and being back at the races, truly a humbling experience.

Sorry for the epic post! Oh, and yea I still own the original datejust :)
