As I said in the " proper beach watch" thread, NO Rolex watch IMO beats the Blue Dialed Yachtmaster for that beach/nautical vibe...and that includes any Submariner in any variation. Elegant, yet casual and fun and bright.

Yachtmaster's are well appreciated around here. If you really want under appreciated Rolex, try Cellini.

I really like each of them and think the new 42mm gold with OF is outstanding. Just my own thing here but Yacht-Master is a silly name and seeing it on the dial is my personal reason for not pursuing one. I’m sure all of the names on the dial are silly in their own right but that’s just my personal hang up.

Will the yachtmaster ever prevail?!
If I bought one, I’d be all watch and no Yacht.
I looked at an “exhibition” Yacht-Master with rhodium dial the other day at the Rolex/Geary’s boutique in Century City, L.A. Beautiful watch. In the store lighting, the dial seemed very light, lighter than in photos I’ve seen here. Don’t know whether that’s dial variance or just lighting. It would be a tough call between that and the blue dial. I agree the name may be off putting to some. But a Yacht-Master by any other name would still shine just as brightly. Maybe a Yacht-Master will come my way, someday. In the meantime, I’m just all watch and no submarine. (For members outside the U.S., there’s a saying in the West about some people being “all hat and no cattle”—meaning, they’ve got the Rancher’s Stetson, but not the ranch). |

It should become more popular if they use a ceramic bezel insert on YM. And the bezel insert would have to be a colourful one that matches the dial colour.

I bought my first Rolex in 2008. At the time I was reluctant due to the perceived snobbery around the brand and not wanting that sort of label on myself for wearing one. I quickly got over that feeling and fell in love with my 116710LN.
In 2010, my first kiddo arrived and my focus shifted dramatically away from watches and other personal endeavors and towards raising kids. Fast forward to last spring and I decided it was time to reintroduce myself to the hobby. Immediately, my eyes were drawn towards the YM40 Rhodium. I simply couldn’t get over its beauty and how much it seemed to be calling my name. I didn’t remotely consider who or how much it was liked/disliked by anyone else. I just knew I wanted one and expressed interest with my SA. After a 6 month wait, I got the call in October. And I have been wearing this beauty ever since. It hasn’t lost any of the initial infatuation for me. If I was forced to pick between this or my GMT, I’d choose the YM every single time. Like others have mentioned, I don’t care at all what’s hot or hyped. I’d never buy a watch that I didn’t want, or simply based on hype. If my AD called tomorrow offering a stainless Sub or GMT, I’d pass immediately because its just not what I want. I really don’t concern myself with what anyone thinks about the YM. Loads of folks love to bag on it and make fun of the name and that’s fine too. I don’t buy anything for the approval of others, especially not 5-figure watches. |

They are nice in their own right. But compared to its “uncles” as you say, It’s a no from me. In no universe am i picking a YM over a Sub or GMT.
imo YMs currently only have buzz because ppl can’t get subs or gmts. |

lol you seriously think people don't genuinely prefer a nice sunburst dial with a better sleeker case shape than a sub/gmt?

No i get the appeal and i know there are YM lovers out there. But for the YM to be currently sold out and become an “allocation” piece now? I believe the general population looking for subs/gmts are just settling for them making it harder to get for the folks who actually want them as their first choice.

It’s quite significant how differently the various Rolex references feel on the wrist. For me, the YM 1 and Daytona are absolute perfection. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

But we see it on here daily, guys just dying to get ANY SS sports model from their AD. Whatever is offered up, immediately purchase, preferences be damned. It’s quite the racket. I empathize with guys who are trying to get their first SS model from their AD, but what a terrible thing to want something so bad that you’ll settle for whatever model is offered. But to your point, I imagine a lot of guys, wanting a Sub in particular, get the call and are offered a YM, and just cave so they don’t have to wait any longer. |

I could never get past the name and the hideous bezel. However, I do like the Rhodium dial and blue accents.

I'm a huge fan of the YM line. I'm wearing my YM42 as I type this.

I think the YM is highly underrated. It’s an awesome watch. A basic OP goes for crazy money but a much better and nicer watch goes for less. Watch collecting is weird.

Its history only goes back to about 1990. Presumably intended as a poncy Sub. Polished bits and a 100m Datejust depth rating - Despite boasting a bigass Triplock crown with visible stem gasket. I love them but it's definitely a poncy Sub. Its bezel is also bi-directional like a GMT so not a serious diver. It seems to be positioned as Rolex's Aquanaut. Which I like. 99% of people buying them probably don't give a toss about any of that anyway.

I have no interest if my YM goes up or down in price or popularity

But when I got my 16622, there was no discount whatsoever. It was the first piece that was on allocation and hard to get other than the Daytona which had a reputation to be hard to get and I got it 2 weeks after the AD literally added my name to the back of an envelope..Then he got me yet another! I miss those days,,you'd get a discount if you knew how to handle yourself and I just figured I'd break even over a few years with factory price increases over time.

The YM Blue 116622 is my most comfortable watch - love how the case fits my wrists (which are small at 16.0 cm). The blue dial is amazing and changes in appearance depending on the lighting. The bezel is beautiful and is what immediately drew me to it. Bought it before the shortage when the cases were full of watches. At the time I thought the super cases were too chunky and this model was sporty and dressy at the same time. You should always wear what you like and not what others think is popular.

I don't want the YM to prevail. I don't want it to become everybody and their mother's watch, like the black Sub Date. I chose the YM 116622 platinum dial as my first Rolex, back in 2015. It's my most worn watch. I'm glad it's discontinued.
For those who don't know, a yachtmaster is a licence to handle boats, the equivalent to a driving licence. It doesn't meant you own a yacht. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Take the blue pill, buy the pedestrian and utilitarian looking black Sub. Sleep with the peace of mind you have what everybody else wants. If everyone aspires to owning one, it must be good, right? Stay in the numbing and reassuring beaten path. Take the red pill, buy the Yacht-Master and step into another dimension, a world of connoisseurs who can appreciate the subtleties and sophistication of such an exquisite and elegant timepiece. No one else will understand it but you don't follow the herd. Instead, you go your own way, free from those dictating what you should be doing, how you should be thinking. You are your own boss and need nobody's validation and pat on the shoulder. You are now at the turning point separating men from boys. |

It's a bit of a sleeper - most people won't even know it's a Rolex.
I think the new models with the blue and dark gray faces look great! That's why I got my wife a YM37, looks amazing ![]() ![]() |
