Why do you care, seriously. Seriously. Do you even have one? If it is not cool enough to those you need affirmation from, get rid of it. If you don’t have one, then why are you even posting about it? And inanimate objects don’t have relatives.

It’s a fine watch. It has been a permanent fixture in the Rolex catalog for decades. Somehow, for an unknown reason, it hasn’t ever become as iconic as the sub, daytona or GMT (to name a few). Why? Well, thats the 60 million dollar question. It has had time on its side, but has always played second fiddle to the aforementioned.
Rolex has introduced many other product lines since, some with arguably more success than the omnipresent yacht master. Nonetheless, it remains a mainstay in the line-up. That means it has its followers, however small or large that following is. I personally like the watch, but I wouldn’t buy one, mainly because I own the others.

Caliber 2236 has a 55h power reserve, better than the 3135. How's that not enough? |

master of the yacht, as in master of the ship, but good to know it's simply a license to handle boats. Not that I'll ever have such a license. Haven't handled boats since they were very small and floated in the tub. And, as Travis McGee said in the John D. MacDonald novels, "a boat is a hole in the water that you throw money into". Watches give me enough of a hole to throw money into, I couldn't possibly afford a money pit the size of a boat...of any size! Beautiful watch, the Yacht-Master. And, it's 37mm variant is a great alternative if it's a better fit...an option not available with the Sub. |

The YM line doesn't excite me in any way. I don't belong to a yacht club, I don't own a yacht, I don't captain a sailboat, and I don't need to accurately time the start of regattas. What else is there? To me, the YM doesn't really do anything useful that a Sub doesn't already do better and with a much stronger pedigree. Even worse, the YM costs more than a Sub. To analogize, for me buying a YM is akin to paying 911 money for a Boxster. I suppose there may be some people out there that would rather purchase a Boxster over a 911 even if the price was the same because of their unique situation or because they think that the Boxster's lines are better or whatever, but that's just not me.

Have a 16800 , but bought a 16622 in 03 which is a sub in a party dress. It WILL do 300m, but I understand Rolex rates it less so as to not upstage the sub.
I had mine tested at a RSC, so it's a for sure thing. I always looked at the YM as a larger Turn-O-Graph. No kidding. Wore it 24/7 from 03 to 19, beat it like a rented mule, most accurate watch I ever had. RSC servced it a year or so back, popped it in the safe, looks LNIB. Old eyes, silver hands on a silver dial and I have difficulty reading it at times. Cured that with a Blancpain 5015. I can read that at any angle or light. Love the 16622 Yacht-Master. |

![]() I don't need the extra power reserve, my watch with 70h PR is generally worn at the weekend or on rotation with several other pieces. |

It'll always fly a little under the radar.
I owned the original platinum dial which I really enjoyed and still miss at times. |

I have a few sports Rolexes including the YM. The YM is definitely the dressier and beautiful watch, but also the least versatile when dressing down. I find my Sub-C and SD4K easier to pair with any of my outfit.

Rolex's website refers to the YM as "The watch of the open seas." Rolex goes on to state, "The Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II models embody the spirit of the sailor. Inspired by the rich heritage that has bound Rolex to the world of sailing since the 1950s, the Yacht-Master blends function and style, while the Yacht-Master II brings together the finest in Rolex technology to create a regatta chronograph built for yachting competition." Meanwhile, the Submariner is marketed as a divers' watch -- not merely a submarine crew's watch. The sub also happens to be tougher than the YM and the most iconic sports watch of all time. The YM just can't compete with that. To me, the YM feels like a strange mash-up of other more established watches and more of a marketing gimmick than anything else. |
