Wearing my first Rolex, Yeah, Yeah !!!
Brand new to forum, have lurked but just joined a few days ago. I purchased (cash, not financed or credit card) my first Rolex on Friday. Got a Coke GMT (P series). Thought about new GMT, even went and tried it on twice, but it was too flashy for my tastes and looked a little clunky on my wrist. I also considered a SS sub, no date because of how clean they look. But I travel a lot in my job and actually know how to use a GMT watch so it seemed the obvious choice.
To realize how huge this is for me you must understand my love affair with watches. I have worn one on my wrist ever day of my life since I was 4 years old. Not kidding, in my 4 year old posed pictures (you know, the Sears portrait studio we all went to as kids) I am wearing a leather strapped, roman numeral dress watch. I have also slept with a watch on every night since early teens. This was out of necessity because I was extremely nearsighted and could not read the numbers on large alarm clock beside bed. So I always slept with a watch so I was aware of what time it was. This meant I could wear any watch in the summer which had hands that absorbed light and glowed but could only wear Luminox watches in the winter. Think about it, in the winter you wear long sleeves so your watches never recharge the hands in light. I am no longer nearsighted as I have 20/15 vision from Lasik surgery (best decision I ever made) but still sleep with a watch on every night out of habit. For someone as "watch crazy" as me it was a goal to have a Rolex before I died. (btw, I am 43 so I have a lot of years left to wear it) Three and 1/2 years ago I lost my job and was unemployed for 7 months. It was tough and we went through a lot of our savings. I then began my own consulting business and through a lot of hard work, it has become profitable to the point of more than doubling my previous income. This has come at a sacrifice of spending a lot of time away from wife and kids and beating my brains out marketing. Fortunately, the family is now also enjoying a higher quality of life because of my success too though. My birthday was last week and when my wife had asked me the week before what I wanted, I said "I think it is time I buy a Rolex". She knows my love affair with watches and said "Ok, you deserve it". So, let others say it is just a watch. That is not true, when I look down at my wrist, my beautiful GMT tells a story to me and reminds me of many things. It reflects the fulfillment of a goal I have had for a long time. It reminds me of how my wife and family stuck by me and believed in me when I started my own business. It says a lot things to me. That is why I wear it, not for others but for me. I know this is a long post but I think some of you can relate to it and probably have similar stories. Thanks for reading and I love your forum here. |

To save is the right way to buy a Rolex. Especially the FIRST one!
And you chose the right watch! There is no better watch than the GMT II, and the non ceramic models have a STRONG following! Enjoy your masterpiece, you deserve it! Hermann |

PorkChop, I can totally relate to your story. I'm a watch fanatic as well, it's your thread so I won't go in to details, but in my late 30s I had a terrible time in life; emotionally, financially, career etc. I owned a Daytona, which I absolutely cherished, that had to be sold to try and make ends meet. I kept on plugging, saying: "One day, I'm going to buy (back) my Daytona" Through hard work, or fate, or maybe just plain dumb luck, my life started to turn around a couple years later, and just a couple years ago, I was able to purchase a brand new Daytona, from a local AD. That watch means so much to me... I completely understand how you feel.
Anyway, I'm sorry to add so much to your thread, but I commend you on your hard work, your dedication to your family and career, and congratulate you on attaining a hard earned goal. Every time you look down at your Coke, pat yourself on the back, like your wife said: "You deserve it!" ![]() Hurry up with the pictures!!!! ![]() |

I agree 100% with everything you've said - especially the part about a Rolex being more than "just a watch''! Great story and welcome to TRF!
