Sandy seawater?

Just curious... have a beach resort holiday coming up, and would like to take my new datejust along. A DJ is all polushed surfaces, will they be scratched and get dull, from say, the sandy beach water in the waves? I won't build sand castles with it on, but swimming at the beach, does the finish stay as nice? Hope so... love to do some sea swimming or snorkeling with it!

It will take a toll on the polished surfaces. Sand is incredibly abrasive and you won't be able to avoid it even if you are careful. I tend to just go with a g-shock on the beach. Also gives me one less thing to worry about when I'm trying to enjoy vacation.

Pretty much this ^^^

Of course the watch can handle it, but if you want to frolic in the surf and sand, I’d wear something you don’t really care about, or no watch at all

Swim, snorkel, and have fun while wearing it. Just do a slight double-check that the crown is screwed in. That's what i do (tho not sure why because it ALWAYS seems to be screwed in properly, yet i tend to be a bit cautious).

Yes the mirror polished bits may get slightly scratched up a bit, yet mainly they're what some refer to as 'micro scratches' so yes it will still look (mainly) nice and shiny. As time passes over the many years, those will add up and find their own 'personality' showing your wear...

...and...

...Enjoy your Time.

Sandy seawater?

I’m not too precious with my watches but I avoid PCLs at the beach. A modern Submariner is perfect for the beach though, no concerns there.

In all the years of owning numerous Rolex watches I have never worn one on the beach or went swimming with it. I have seen many friends how they have destroyed their watches by going swimming and lay in the sand etc.

Sandy seawater?

Never heard of sand being an issue until now. I wear both my divers to the beach all the time.

I wouldn’t worry. It’s just sand.
If you are that concerned, get a Sub and be worry free

I think you are over thinking it.
If you are concerned about sand damaging your metal watch, have you thought about your skin??

If I was on a beach holiday a watch would be the last thing on mind why the need to wear any watch on the beach or just paddling or snorkeling in the sea defeats me.

To tell the time? To time things? That’s what dive watches are made for. As you say, so many watches today are pampered.

I don’t see any problem, if you hate microscratches from the sand just don’t rub it with cloth or shirt or something before you washed the sand of. All will be fine.

I wear my nice watches to the beach all the time. I try to remember to make sure my crown is screwed down, and I rinse them off in the pool, sink, or shower afterwards.

Have fun, don’t worry. It’s just a watch.

It’s simple, you use the watch or sell it. This shit is so ridiculous, so much worries about something so trivial. Be a man like your dad put it on your wrist and go about your day.

No problem for me. Rolexes are tough. If, on the other hand, you are afraid of ruining it, do not wear it. But I prefer to celebrate life's moments by wearing my watches.

Legendary marine biologist Dr. Sylvia Earle has spent decades scuba diving and and living in marine environments, including beaches, with a solid gold DJ. If you want to use it, use it, otherwise leave it in the safe and post photos of how nice it looks, BNIB!! Or put on those clear stickers you can buy to protect your watch .

I live by the beach and never think of taking of my watch to go for a swim or a walk on the beach. I just don't get it. I've been tied to oceans most of my life and generally stay on a towel, blanket, or chair when not walking or swimming (including body surfing). Harder is keeping sand out of my shorts when getting crunched by a wave.

I've heard it said here in FL you don't to wear a watch in the ocean because the flashing metal can look like fish scales to a shark.

Barracudas not sharks. But yeah, barracudas are nasty guys. I had one come out of the water and hit a gold tone fishing reel while the boat was cruising at about 25mph offshore.

I always enjoy my divers but the beach and most water activities get my collection of Seiko divers. Not that the others can't handle it but because I enjoy the tool nature of my Seiko's. The Turtles get a lot of wrist time at the beach. Just my choice.
