Is it time to get the Smurf?

Hello everyone,

I know most responses are going to be to get what the heart wants and do whatever makes sense for me. But I'm interested in whether or not this sounds like a good idea.

So here goes.. (I'll try and make this short)

I've been lusting over a smurf (not the new model with a black dial) for many many years but always kept putting it off because of the price. I kept telling myself I'll get it later on in life. This was when I was 36. During my watch collecting journey, I found that was purchasing blue watches just to scratch the itch of the smurf (blue omega seamaster, blue omega Aqua Terra, Deepsea blue, BLNR, Tudor black bay blue, Tudor fxd.). I have since sold many of them but still have the deepsea, BLNR and fxd.

Now I'm 45.

Last week I stumbled upon a smurf in like new condition with stickers, new warranty card dated 2020. As such, I'm thinking of selling off the deepsea, BLNR, fxd, adding a little bit more cash on top of that for the smurf.

For reference, my collection also consists of:
Rolex Daytona Ceramic (white)
Rolex GMT BLRO
Rolex Explorer 2 (polar)
Tudor black bay pro
Panerai 233
IWC big pilot 43
Omega Speedmaster
Omega Seamaster 300 Black/Black
Cartier Santos

Would you guys do this? In other words, is it worth selling 3-4 watches for the smurf?

Thanks for your input everyone and sorry for the long message

I can only say that it’s an amazing watch and that it should maintain value. Rolex white gold is very nice.

Sounds like you’ve always had the love for one so I’d say scratch that itch

If I had a 116619LB, I would have no need for another wristwatch.

Considering your collection I’d consider it.

It’s a great piece! Here’s an action shot at a NYC Belgium bar for inspiration.

How much is the Smurf? What are you getting for the 3 watches? My math says you are either paying to much for the Smurf or getting squeezed on the other 3….. or both

With your big and nice collection, I would think a small consolation to get something you have wanted for a long time makes perfect sense.

Sure, if you love it, why not. But make sure you love it. I owned one for awhile and got tired of that shade of blue on the dial. Something about it didn't do it for me. I prefer the new version, and you get a nicer case to boot.

I’d definitely do it, you clearly need to get it out your system by owning one for a while. Who knows it might stay in your collection forever.

If you settle for something else but never lose the itch, you will eventually get to the same finish point but it costs more and takes longer. I'd certainly dip into that collection for a Smurf, not the new one with the black dial. It sounds like that's what you are going to do. Will prices come down further?

With what you have in your collection I would make that trade. I think the Smurf is one of the top all time great Subs. The dial and bezel color has me looking past the blockier case.

The OG 116619LB Smurf is one of the all time Rolex greats. The WG heft adds to its appeal as the apex Sub. Add it whilst you can. I also think it is a great opportunity to rationalise your collection: The Smurf will easily replace the Tudor, Pan, IWC, and Omegas. The remaining Rolex + Cartier combinations cover you land, air, sea, and Tux.

This. Too blue. I have the 12 and prefer it. That said, I’m hoping for blue sunburst blue bez

If it were me, I'd do it. You already have so many Rolex and other brand sport models, but obviously the LB Smurf is what you really want. Zero trepidation about trading in several others to get what you really want.

I did something similar to get my meteorite GMT. Traded in a 2 Speedies, a James Cameron DEEPBLUE, and a Zenith black dial ss Daytona. I honestly don't miss any of those and I love the GMT. I think you'll feel the same way.

With your existing Rolex collection that’s a yes from me, but conditional on how much extra cash that you have to add.

These will be increasingly difficult to find in BNIB or LNIB condition so I'd say go for it
