Considering this white dial, P series 16520 - thoughts welcome.

Hello everyone,

I already own a P series 116520 (black dial) which I love but I'm a big fan of the balanced look of the dial on a 16520 and have been smitten by the white dial with black subdials, which seems to be the near perfect neo vintage iteration of the Daytona.

Long story short, a very reliable, well known seller has offered me an A serial 16520 that's naked aka no box, no papers (which I am fine with) for a price that is below market (20k USD).

I am tempted but wanted to ask if there are any alarm bells based on the pics I've seen and have been sent.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Looks authentic on the surface, but the case is quite over-polished. Lug edges and crown guards are rounded off. That’s probably the reason it’s below market value.

Depends how picky you are, but I’d rather pay more and get a stronger example.

All 16520s have brushed lugs. Your example has polished lugs that is not correct. That’s enough for me to pass.

Thanks both. Yes, it is over polished though the lugs aren't toothpick thin. What I did miss is that they should be brushed, not polished!

I still haven't ruled this out yet and assume the case condition is salvageable if the watch were to find its way to the Rolex AD for a service job?

Also some additional pics that I had asked for about the movement and caseback.

I would not pay even close to 20k for that example. Better off paying up for condition.

Yes this looks like what Tudor did with the 79260/70/80 and 79260P/79270P/79280P (*Polished version).....except Rolex didn't make a 16520P of course ;-).
These Zenith non-ceramics (and in-house 116520 also) are in free fall in UK, I suspect £14-15 k for a nice loose goose is doable in next few months.

Thanks, everyone. Common sense has prevailed. I was too enamored by the price and overlooked the obvious flaws so thank you for a dose of reality.

Prices seem to be "softening" (but not exactly in free fall anymore) but who knows when it bottoms out. I'll just be patient and wait, or, try to increase to a higher personal threshold to purchase this if it comes to that.

I think you’ve made a good decision.
I do not like the fonts on that rotor one bit.

Well done. This was below average condition. You can find much better conditions 16520s

Or even poorly polished from a person with very little Rolex know how (who might have mixed up with 1165XX which had polished lugs instead of brushed ones ) :-(
