It's finally here (my new SD)!

Alright chaps - it finally arrived.

I bought it from a broker with whom I've previously done business and am reasonably happy. I say reasonably because:

* The watch does indeed appear to be brand new, unused and authentic (following careful inspection - one can never be too careful). This is obviously most important (and great news).
* The watch was supposedly sourced via the broker's local AD (per a telephone conversation) - yet its paperwork suggests its from Venezuela (country code 770). The AD stamp on the cert. confirms this. I s'pose I should be happy that it actually HAS an AD stamp. But still...
* The anchor included is for a Sub, not SD (1000ft/300m). This may be because they included an older anchor as I believe Rolex hasn't been shipping these with Dwellers for a while - mine's a D-serial.

There's a also a booklet missing, which I knew going in - so that's not particularly worrying.

So, what say you. Is it worth kicking up a fuss or at least informing the broker of the discrepancies... Methinks it is. At least out of sheer principle.

Btw - I love the watch! This one's a keeper...

Rgds,
Nick

AD, I wouldn't worry about it. You can get an anchor on ebay, or someone here will send you one. The booklet is available online as well. IMHO, a foreign SD is an SD regardless. Wear the watch in good health and know it is more traveled than you might be. LOL

I suppose it depends on how good a price it was bought for and if it is worth while trying to chase the odd bits.

The anchor is a bonus as I beleive they stopped a while ago.(Not sure on a Seadweller.)

For the booklet it will be hard to chase if you knew going into the deal.If it is a keeper it wont matter really.

As for the AD and country code.It doesn't really as long as it tallies up and the numbers correspond between the paperwork and the watch.A new watch is a new watch.

Congratulations

Aaron

Re: price - I got it a little less than a $1000 below what I would have paid from a local AD invluding tax. Effective discount = 16% from new MSRP.

Arthur my AD gave me an extra anchor when I bought my last SD and its the correct SD one. But, your going to have to come to NJ to get it because no shipping company wants to handle it. Let me know if you want it and I'll put it aside for you.

Congrats, Nick....the SD is a WINNER!!! As long as it's brand new and genuine, why bother about trivia like that silly anchor and other things. The booklet, in any case, gives you bugger all information.

Just enjoy the watch, pal....that's a cracker....and post some pics when you can.

Cheers - JJ

Congratulations, Nick. You got a good deal there.

And if there's anything in the manual you need to know, just ask Roger. He's probably got it memorized.

I always wanted an SD... I will probably have to sell all my watches just to obtain one!

Congrats on your new acquisition.

Sounds to me like you did very well on the price and since you bought it outside the dealer network, if it were me, I would not be inclined to complain because:
1. Got it for a bargain price, and 16% seems especially good on that model.
2. You knew you were buying from a broker, not a dealer.
3. Since you did so well on the price, if you really want to booklet, you could buy one online.

May I add a special comment here as well? I have had positions dealing with the public and had customers ask me to do "special favors" that required me to twist the rules a little to make them happy. In cases like this, I would always warn them about issues like, for example in your case, the watch might not come with the original booklet. I ask them if they still want to go through with it and they always say yes, that's OK. Then they get the item and call me back screaming about the very thing I warned them about. (By the way, I have never been in the watch business.) When I would get off the phone in a situation like this, I always would feel a surge of anger and swear to myself that I would never make this exception for anyone again, because they "beat me up" EVEN THOUGH I warned them in advance and they wanted to go ahead anyway. What this does is make you not want to stretch to do favors for people anymore because it feels like it's not worth it. Now I don't know you and you have probably already thought of it, but I would call your broker up and thank him for the fact that you got what you really wanted: a NEW watch at a GREAT price and leave out any criticism "for the sake of principle". He might not have been able to do the original deal he envisioned but instead of calling you and telling you no, may have tried another route--obviously I am guessing here, but I think it's always better to have another friend and I'll bet your broker will be gratefully inclined to do his best for you the next time you buy a watch from him because he'll think of you as a good customer. Also, the person he got it from may have been the one to give him the bad information. I don't mean to lecture you, I just had this come up recently for me and it made me mad for days. Human courtesy can be a great salve. Good luck with you new watch by the way, the Sea Dweller is next on my list.

Good points...

Haakon,

Your comments are well placed. This is the second watch I've bought from this broker, and their service has been OK but not fantastic, though I did send him an email thanking him for a great watch.

The most recent purchase (of the SD) was tainted a little bit by virtue of the above, plus the fact that simple questions via email would never really be fully answered (like "which booklets come with the watch?"; answer: "2"). Additionally, their price, whilst good, swelled 3 times in 3 days. It started off as old MSRP - 5%, then changed to MSRP the following day, then old MSRP + 3% for credit card handling when they presumably realized that they were giving the watch away for too little. Be that as it may (and they of course have every right to do this), I don't view that type of behaviour as completely ethical, and I viewed their inability to answer very simple questions is a little sloppy. So while I like the watch and am thankful for the price, I don't believe the broker bent over backwards or made any special concessions to sell me this watch. I was actually expecting slightly better service given the money I'd dropped on another watch a little further back. I guess if I want great service I need to go to a top-of-the-line AD and pay for it.

That said, if the watch is indeed authenticated as 100% genuine (it's with a local AD as I write this), I would have no qualms placing another order with this broker down the road. I'll expect a good price, reasonable service, and little to no effort on their part to build any kind of a relationship - which is fine with me.

Anyway - I appreciate your comments and fully empathize.

Rgds,
Nick

Nick:

Thank you for taking my comments in context-I greatly appreciate that. And I also can see what made you a little edgy, given your explaination of the way the broker changed the price and all 3 times and refused to confirm the details for you: poor communications on their part if you ask me. I would be a bit miffed as well.

I have been to all the AD's around here (3 major ones in Seattle, WA) and none of them were willing to even give me 5% on the SD. But I did also ask some dealers in California and Las Vegas and they seemed more willing to deal (and I wouldn't have to pay sales tax, which is 8.9% in my city), but just would give 5% on that particular model (15% on the Datejust series). My understanding of one reasons they resist discounts on Rolex is because their dealer price is fully 58% of the retail price, while all other brands stick to the conventional 50% of retail, meaning they are already taking an 8% hit on the brand before you even talk to them. Plus Rolex makes strong efforts to policing the pricing of their watches as well. So to me you got a great discount. Anyway, congratulations on the new watch, I hope it works out well for you and thanks for your generous reply.

Interesting - I did not know that Rolex AD's work with lower margins than AD's of other brands...
