new member-big mistake-need movement
Gentlemen, here is the deal,
like an idiot, i purchased a rolex datejust case and band on ebay. thinking, due to my current financial distress, I could sell my Tudor Tiger Chrono and build a datejust and have a little money left over for some bills. Yes, I know now this is a stupid thing to have done, but my only recourse is to try and complete the watch with all genuine and model/year specific parts. so, i need a cal.3135 movement for an early to mid '90's datejust case. The seller swears the case /band are genuine. once it arrives i will have it checked to see if i made an even bigger blunder. Financial distress can make a sane person make un-reasonable decisions. It gets worse: the case back is numbered 16200 which would indicate an all steel watch, (which I found out after the purchase) however, the case has a 18kt gold fluted bezel and the band is a two-tone jubilee-again, said to be genuine. Do I live with the wrong case back? or do I change the bezel /band to match the case number? Obviously, if the parts are found to be fake, I am out the money and life continues. Any help is appreciated. andrew davis |

You can find Rolex movements on fleabay or other places online, but to try and save a few bucks by 'building' your own Rolex always, always backfires. And once you get it together, it's not worth what it should be worth since it's IMO a 'franken watch'.
My only advice would be to try and get out of the deal and get your money back, and start afresh and buy a complete watch. If you can't, then take the case and bracelet to either an authorized service center or a certified Rolex watchmaker and have him install the movement/dial/crystal and proper caseback. But going this route, you'll likely find that buying a complete watch was the more cost effective route. A new movement from Rolex will run you well over a thousand bucks, a dial is about $300, a crystal about $100, hands about $150, and a caseback about $100... then the labour. If you find the bracelet and case are not genuine, well... buyer beware. Hope it works out for you. Last edited by Atomic; 2 November 2006 at 02:46 AM.. |

The case back is not a problem and yours will do,your problem is the movement dial hands etc.Dials hands you can get,but movements are the hardest to find. But then like Atomic has said your watch will still be a frankenwatch.Myself would hang on to your Tudor a fine Chronograph watch

thanks,
i guess it is going to boil down to if the parts are real. if fake, it is a non-issue and it is a total loss. if real, maybe i can sell the band, case, crystal, case back for parts and recoup some of the monies and then start over. best place in Dallas/Fort Worth to have it checked for genuine? Rolex Service Center in Dallas? andrew davis |

Sounds as though you have your hands full with this one. Maybe taking the whole package to a reputable watch maker would help set you in the best direction. Best of luck

Put it back on eBay. You may be able to get your money back this way.

This reminds me of the classic car business. It is always cheaper to get a car thats been restored, then to restore it yourself. The same applies here. My best advice is to cut your loses as of now. Put everything you bought back up for sale and with the proceeds and a little saving up buy the watch you really want. Rolex mov'ts are tough to find, expensive, and as a novice you really wouldn't know what to look for. You will still need other parts,(hands, dial, ect) and you will still not have a correct Rolex. Good-luck to you and look at it as a lesson learned.

Hey Andrew -
I'm also in Dallas, but have never taken a watch anywhere except RSC in Uptown. There has to be someone who can work on a Rolex, but I just don't know who. Up until last year I worked in a building accross the street so I just walked in. And after dealing with the crap Panerai AD here in Dallas I'll never send in another watch through them.......but that's a different story. How about just trying to get out of the deal, or put it back up on fleeBay and start fresh. For some of the deals you can find through good (and trusting) members here and on TZ there's no way I would try to make a DJ. Regardless, good luck and if you do "make" the watch keep us posted with up-to-date pictures of the process! |

Andrew first of all welcome. I'd cut my losses and put the parts back on sale (as has been mentioned). There's no cheap way to own a Rolex.

I would offer it to the next highest Ebay bidder than yourself. This way you stand to lose just $20 or so.

Gentlemen, I agree with all posts and thank you for taking time to reply.
I have never owned a fake anything. I was not planning on putting anything in this but the correct parts, but now I know getting a movement would be impossible. I will put it back on ebay. If the thing is a true part, the band alone should be worth what I paid, but my gut feeling is this was a scam and not genuine parts. I have owned 24 Corvettes and know a little about originality. I have also owned about 15 Rolexes in my long 54 years... My Tudor Tiger Chrono is on ebay as we speak. again, thanks to all and I will update with the genuine/fake info. should be interesting lesson at the very least. andrew davis arlington, texas |

All I can say is welcome, Andrew. Glad you found us and sorry to hear about your problem. Hopefully you won't lose out too much on the deal, but as the guys have already said, chaulk it up to a lesson learned and just buy the whole thing.
Kinda like buying a BMW shell and trying to find the innards that fit. Don't work that way.

Sounds like a difficult situation and I see that you are keenly aware of it. But I do believe there is a dealer who sells on "the bay" for I think the New Zealand market, perhaps Australian, and they advertise that they do work assembling "new" Rolexes from "authentic" parts. You might try and find them and contact them about your situation because they might not only have the movement but could also have the ability to put it all together for you. Wouldn't be the real thing certainly, but it might be a path that will help you make the best out of an unpleasant situation. At least it might be worth a try. And sorry, I don't remember the name of the company who does this, but I would try "the bay" that's associated with New Zealand first--hopefully I am remembering this correctly. I also hope that you are ethical enough that you will never sell the resulting watch as a real Rolex. Good luck.
