Lots of guts - 19 and about to be dropped behind enemy lines together with your squad.

About now, darkness had fallen.

But action still filled the air with the scent of cordite and smoke.

No rest for the weary - most had been awake since the day before.

Brothers-in-arms, the Sun also rises tomorrow, day after day, and the slogging continued.

Churchill had caught the ears of war weary citizens 18 months earlier. His November 1942 speech at the Lord Mayor's Day Luncheon in London, after victories in North Africa:
"Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end.
But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."

The survivors on the night of June 6th 1944 could hear an echo that rang true for many.

Although unknown that night, indeed this was now "the beginning of the end".

Respect for all who consecrated those beaches with their last full measure and those who made it inland.

That’s for sure.

I lost two uncles in WWII. My mom’s brother and my dad’s brother. I never met either of course.

My mom’s other brother also served and survived. According to my mom, he never talked about it. Never said one word about what it was like. Must have been hell…

80 years ago...D-Day Remembered

It's early morning in London 80 years ago.

In a few hours, 4am local time, the bulldog edition of the Daily Telegraph will proclaim many successes - and the troops are pushing further inland.

By now, through the miracle of mass communication via shortwave, the entire globe knows that this day has been won...

Here's a moving tribute to D-Day sung by Sir Tom Jones.

Yes, the Greatest Generation, indeed. My dad was a naval officer during this war, and my uncle, just 18 or 19, landed in Normandy and survived, thankfully. Such courage and sense of duty from so many. So much respect for our veterans and men and women serving now, as well.

We owe them all a huge debt of gratitude.

The National WWII museum in New Orleans is worth a visit. It started out as the D-Day museum, and its exhibit on the invasion is fantastic.

I have an Uncle that is still alive. Will be 102 in a few weeks. I heard there are only about 150 vets still left and he's one of them.

Drove a truck off a landing craft, got lost behind german lines, slept in a ditch with his rifle. They pulled him off the line as they expected another Uncle to die, aka Private Ryan. Both made it home however.

Amazing men.
