Time to yourself

Had this conversation at my office today.

Your partner has a trip out of town (a few days to a week) so you’re home alone or with the kiddos. What do you do? How do you spend your time? Is it freedom or miserable?

Personally, when mine goes out of town my routine doesn’t really change much except I deep clean the house and kitchen. Maybe some projects I’ve been putting off. Grill a steak every night for dinner. Go to bed a little later. Fall asleep in bed with the tv on.

Others in my conversation today were a mixed bag, some like me, some that call their friends as soon as their partner is gone and either go out or have a boys/poker night.

I was kind of the odd man out when I said I start missing mine as soon as she gets on the plane.

Got a lot of weeks to myself this year so just curious if there is anything I’m missing out on and how you all spend your time sans partner.

Did you pickup that Kart? I would burn a few extra laps on that deal.

For me it totally depends. Wife and kids gone is way different than me alone with 3. If they have all dipped I’m not dissimilar from what you described. It’s funny, I can keep myself occupied 50 ways to Sunday, but after one day/night with everyone gone it’s weirdly too quite in the house.

Great topic

Our kids are both at University so we are empty nesters. When Andrea is away from home (which isn’t often), I do pretty much what you describe.

I eat scrounge suppers, or I bbq a steak. I also usually eat infront of the tv, and I’m watching all the sports I want

Now … Andrea and her bestie are headed to a Thailand for their 50th bdays this July for the entire month …. I’m think TRF party

I haven’t gotten the kart yet. I have quite a few rental sessions prepaid at the little track by me. I have a dilemma because I have nowhere to put it under cover unless it’s in a trailer. That just seems like a pain in the ass to have to hook the trailer up then take it out of the trailer every time I want to just rip down the street and around the neighborhood.

Also, there is two I am looking at now. One that is very reliable (4 stroke) starts no matter the temp, but it only gets to like 50.

The other gets to about 80 but is much more finicky in the sense of having to change jets in the carb depending on the weather and other requirements such as 93 octane.

The difference in price of the two karts is negligible <$500.

I just don’t know how much having to fiddle with something I just want to play with will work until I get tired of it. But I know I will get tired of going 50 quickly too.

Like I said, a dilemma.

My wife has traveled a lot worldwide in the last 25 years. 2017 was 150 days.

Now it’s a lot less, but the house is not a home when she’s away.

I always played hockey 3 nights a week so was gone myself for a couple of hours but other than that I NEVER go out when she’s not home. Even now since I stopped playing hockey I don’t venture out at night.

Too easy to get into trouble.

You hit it on the head, it doesn’t feel like home when she isn’t here.

I very rarely go out by myself late either. Hell, if we are out on a date night past 11 these days we feel like kids and can’t get to bed till 3am. lol

My heart still goes pitter patter on the day she’s coming home.

I guess that’s how the dogs know she’s coming home, and they always know.

Thanks brother!!

No way in hell Andrea is 50!!

Alright, enough kissing ass.

I think a TRF party would be amazing but by then I bet I won’t even be able to enter your country.

I hope Andrea and her bestie have a phenomenal time in Thailand!! I had a blast but also saw some very weird stuff when I visited.

We’re empty nesters, too. I hate it when my wife goes away. Some guys celebrate. Not me. I don’t go out. I don’t do anything special. It just really sucks…

Not married yet but fiance spends most days of the week here. It feels no difference tbh. I do the same things with or without her. If she’s here, she’ll simply join me.

Sure, there's something that hasn't been mentioned.

Free, asynchronous online learning - in all sorts of areas. And now is the best time to try something out of your "mainstream".

You might find an untapped better way of spending time and broadening the mind.

There are several top notch universities doing it on EdX. You can audit free - or do a cert for a small fee:

Also, Ivy League: https://pll.harvard.edu/catalog/free

Pretty much the same as you, but I don’t miss her, lol It always bugs me that I deep clean when she’s gone, but the favor is never returned.

When my wife travels I enjoy a life without honey-do's. I seem to have more free time when she's away and often gather up my camera gear and head out for some landscape photography. If she'll be gone more than a week I'll take a long road trip to somewhere she doesn't care to go.

It was a joke because of the current geopolitical situation. That’s why I said “by then” inferring Canada could ban all Americans entry by July.

it's actually pretty easy to be deemed inadmissable to Canada. If you are a felon (convicted or accused) you're out. If you have a DUI conviction you are not gonna make that tour of the Molson factory. If you're scragly looking enough to suggest that you don't have means of support or might be on something, you're out on dress code violation. They keep the place spiffed up pretty good, these Canadiens!

I am single, but dating someone specific.

I love and covet my alone time. It will be a challenge for me to change this in any regard.

A couple of times a year, my bride goes away on a long weekend to something called a 'crop'. It's a bunch of ladies sitting around at long tables scrapbooking and making cards. She prepares her supplies in advance and loads her car with paper and stamps and dies and glue and all kinds of apparatus. I've seen the pictures - It looks like hell on earth to me but she seems to enjoy it.
I joke with her that I can't miss her if she won't leave. I like a few hours alone time every day but I do miss her when she's not home for days at a time. We're empty nesters now so the house is already quiet a lot. Thank goodness for the pets otherwise I'd just be talking to myself. I don't cook so my eating habits change pretty drastically. I'll order out and try to get maximum leftovers out of each order. The dog at home tends to keep solo activities and adventuring short. I always clean the house right before she comes home which she appreciates.

wife just got a promotion at work that'll have her traveling 2 - 3 days a week, typically. this week was the first.

almost feel like it's normal, though with the promotion, the away time will be much more consistent than when we were running the team. i usually end up ordering out and watching war-related movies. i don't get bored, and i enjoy the chill time, but i prefer her being home. will probably pick the guitar back up. guitar and legos.

My brother in law away on a 3 week trip/ cruise. He’s got a barn conversion with land / chickens/ couple of cats etc so I’m house sitting for 3 weeks. I’m an hour door to door for work but in morning before I go to work I clean/ set the log burner so as soon as in / I can put a match to it. This is end of week 1 but done before

Week days - light fire/ check chickens & collect eggs/ do some light weights/ dinner/ watch a film or some Netflix. Catching up on sleep too. Seeing my other 1/2 on Sunday & she’s up for final weekend. It’s like a holiday
