Tudor 7966/0 “Ranger” without ranger?

Hi Guys!

Came across a decent looking Tudor 7966/0 prince oyster date from 1967. It has the ranger dial and hands but are missing the “Ranger” on the dial.

Any idea how this would happen? Is it maybe a service dial or could it be a counterfeit? Looks legit to me..

Thanks for any input

The watch can be seen here: http://https://bruun-rasmussen.dk/m/...y_id%3D1008203

I don't recall off the top of my head seeing that variant of dial. But there are many variations back then.

That said I don't like the hands, the lume on the hour hand is much longer than normal. I don't like the number fonts and it certainly looks like the lume is gone.

It's an apparent anomaly - there could be an answer built into the assemblage.

First, shouldn't the bracelet be a 7836?
Rather than a 5-digit one...

Then, when the 78360 was fitted during a possible refurbishment, perhaps the dial was refinished? (Its lume seems awfully white for a 50+ year old dial.)

Here's a real Ranger and its dial is original

So if we agree the auction lot has a refinished dial, then the dial refinisher picked the wrong pad to reprint the dial and chose a "ROTOR SELF-WINDING" pad.

Like this one I grabbed from the internet...

Thus a franken for sale???

Possibly. I don't like some of the fonts on this suspect ranger, I don't like the Arab numerals, not enough definition on the lume, there are several concerns around the hands. To me it looks like a decent refinished dial, but, there are a lot of anomalies in that time frame.
