Hi all, I wonder if I could ask everyone about the main differences between the stainless steel GMT and the maxi-dial GMT?

I know the maxi dial model has the larger indices, a green GMT hand vs red on the SS, the crown appears larger on the maxi-dial version, and the word "Rolex" is stamped into the metal case interior circumference around the dial.

I know the TT maxi-dial version is also a few thousand more than the stainless steel.

Any other main differences?

Are they going to get rid of the original GMT model with the smaller crown? I actually like that for travel as I like the smaller crown. Hope they don't get rid of a tried and true classic like the original GMT ll.

Plus the Cal 3186 movement with the parachrome spring balance and IMO the biggest improvement, at last a ball bearing winding rotor,larger winding crown.Now they say this new parachrome coil balance spring,could improve accuracy.But the movement was very accurate as in its other form the cal 3185, now slightly moded to the 3186.

pardon me......

this picture of the 3186 movement doesnt show a ball bearing rotor....

i think only the 4130 uses a ball bearing rotor...

All I can and will say is that you have to try it on. The new bracelet feels different in a way that's hard to describe. Reading the specs, I wasn't altogether convinced that there was all that much difference, but having tried it on I can now say that the 50th GMT is an altogether new watch.

You are correct my mistake,the 3186 is slightly thicker than the 3185 so a slightly thicker case.And now has a slightly better setting more precise for the 12 hour if and when switching to different timezone,but not a huge improvement on the 3185 IMO.

In the new one ALL links are SOLID - no HOLLOW links whatsoever!!

also an interesting point is that the new TT and YG GMTII 50th Anniversary Editions have a bezel that can only be moved in 1 hour increments. Although not a real issue to me i'm not sure how that works in the 1 or 2 zone which are are not + or - in full hour increments

Also limits using the rotating bezel on the new GMT to record elapsed time. ONe thing I do like about the tradtional GMT, is with the 2 different colors, very easy to use to record time increments, also can set it precise since rotates 120 clicks. ALso with the 2 colors, at a glance I can tell if it is day or night in the home time zone or GMT I am tracking.

I will agree with the fact that the new TT GMT is an entirely new looking watch. Where as the SS GMT pretty much looks the same as it has for 50 years.

I checked out the new TT GMT last weekend. It's chunky. It's almost the same size as my SD! I am not sold on the maxi dial. It might grow on me, but I am waiting to see the SS version.

New ceramic bezel on the TT GMT is truely awesome ... its imprinted with Gold letters and gives watch a beautiful look. I think the higher price is justified by the improvements made to this 50th anniversary GMT II watch.

Check out the rolex website for the Ceramic bezel video and other improvements. The website actually showcases this watch - imo Rolex is very proud of the improvements they have made to this watch.

If the bezel only works in hour clicks, I would not want it. Why on earth woudl they do that?

The bezel jumps in 24 clicks around the dial. Each jump of the bezel is like say from 12 to 12.30 and then from 12.30 to 1....and so on.

The current GMT-II has a bezel which moves in small click stops.
