Sub 5513 does not crew back in..Help

He everyone,

I'm trying to make a deal with a person on the Submariner 5513 here in Houston. He told me that the watch keeping good time but for some reason the crown does not screw back in all the way (he has a jewelry store and bought it back from a customer). He is not an expert on Rolex and don't know why. Does anyone encounter this before? How much does it cost to fix? Please give me some advice. Thanks.

If it was me I would be inclined to give it a miss and find a 5513 elsewhere. As with any vintage/pre-owned Rolex go with the best you can get/afford.

For sure the watch will need a full service, plus some parts to function well.

Yep - if you do decide to go forth make sure you count a full service into the price.

If the price was right, I would buy it. Its nothing that can't be rectified.

You might end up getting a great deal as the watch has a fault, it should be cheap, get a full service and you will have a great watch at less cost than a fully functioning 5513 (if you get it at the right price).

Thanks for the advised guys.

I offered him $3000, I think the full service would probably cost between $700-$800. Is this a good price? the watch is 3mil. serial and the dial and hands look very good.

It sounds like a fair deal, but I would get a second opinion on it before I bought it.

Thanks Steve. I will let Rolex AD inspect it before I buy it.

Have to agree its most properly just the crown tube or the crown both just serviceable items that are often changed at normal service

Still no harm in getting a second opinion, just in case. Better safe than sorry, it might have other problems as well, you never know and since you don't have any history better yet.

What do you mean by "does not screw all the way back in."

I don't really know Larry. The owner told me that it will only go in half way. That's what he told me over the phone. I've not seen the watch yet. He did send me some photos of the watch, the dial and hands looks really nice and he told me that on the phone too. He ask me to come to his store to look at it.

Probably cross threaded and like Padi said, an easy fix.

All stems are not the same length, so it's possible that the wrong stem has been installed. Or it could be as simple as the gasket out of place in the crown or one of the pinions or detents not moving out of the way..........

If it is authentic and has the correct movement (1520/1530), then it is certainly worth restoration or at least rescuing.......

Dials, hands, and even cases have a nasty way of being exchanged for less expensive bogus parts in these older examples, so that would be key.....
