PO 42mm weight : is it really unbearable ??

Unfortunately my relationship with the amazing IWC Galapagos is not working as expected so I've decided to put it for sale and go back to a more simple watch, just plain steel, time and date.

I already own a Sea Dweller, wich I admit it took me quite a bit to get used to it's weight. I'm finely tuned with it now and I barely remember it's there,do you think I may noticed the further weight increase wit the PO (42mm,bracelet) ??
A lot of enthusiastic reviews on the web about the PO,but the weight issue is something always mentioned.

Wrist test at ADs has been done several times, but you know the feeling...when you are at an AD most of the times emotions take over and everything seems perfect....

I moved from a PloProf to a 42 Planet Ocean so I've never noticed the weight.

Yes, the Planet Ocean is heavier than the typical Rolex (all except for the DSSD) but the bracelet balances the watch nicely for a comfortable fit. I doubt that you will notice the extra heft.

Who said the weight is "unbearable"? I admit, a plastic Casio it is not. The weight of the PO is sought after by many. The word "solid" always comes up when describing the Planet Ocean for a reason.

Its true, the PO is a heavy watch, but the bracelet is heavy unlike the rolex bracelet, so the weight is evenly distributed around the wrist, so it doesnt flop about on your wrist. It is for me the most comfortable watch ever, but only if you are lucky to get the links right as there is no micro-adjustment on the bracelet and only 1 half link to play with.

Solid......? Yes.
Indestructible......? Almost.
Tank of a watch......? Absolutely.
Indefinable 'heft'......? Definitely.
Unequalled wrist presence at the money....? Arguably.

Unbearable.....? No.

Definitely not unbearable IMO.

shouldn't be a problem. I went from a 42mm Breitling to a 45.5 PO as my daily wear. It was an easy transition.

I have a Seamaster GMT, and find the Omega bracelet allows for more fine tuning with the wrist contours... should be no problem with the fit and weight. On my Sea Dweller, I had to remove a permanent link on the 6 side to get the right fit.

At one time, my watch rotation was between a 42mm PO, GMT IIc and Sub no date. I can tell you that the PO is heavier than the Sub but not heavier than the IIc. I wore all of them without a problem.

I had a Bond Seamaster, that was a heavy watch with the bracelet, more so that my Sub, but was very easy to wear. My current 42mm PO, I wear on a mesh, I love the look and bulk of the mesh and it is very light.

If you are buying new, buy on a bracelet then buy other OEM or after market straps, as if you want to buy the bracelet separately it is by far the most expensive route to go.

I have love my PO and have not worn my Rolex for months, I am seriously thinking of putting it on the block and getting a black PO for more formal occasions..

what is the weight of the PO on its regular bracelet for both models (42 and 45.5) and also what is the weight of a sub and SD (discontinued) for comparison's sake as I do understand that just the weighing in does not determine overall comfort and how the weight is 'experienced'...thanks a lot in advance :)

If you're used to the weight of the SD, then you should have no problem with the PO. It does sit relatively high on the wrist, so I typically keep it on a NATO to keep it closer and for any quick adjustments.

Great post -- 'nuff said

I love the weight of the Omegas makes them feel substantial - everyone is incredibly surprised by how light the Rolexes are..

I bought one for my son-in-law. Definitely feel the weight but you get used to it. Certainly wouldn't stop me from stealing it from him if he ever took it off.

I've only had the PO on briefly at the AD. It felt incredibly comfortable and was great on my wrist. In fact, it felt more comfortable than my GMT IIc. But I must admit that I actually like the heavy feeling of watches now, it just 'feels right.'

That picture was one that helped sway me to a Planet Ocean! Love the mesh.

Thank you,

After the first week, I no longer thought my 45.5 was heavy, or big for that matter.

I purchased my 45.5mm PO a week ago.

Haven't noticed the weight, but I have noticed the lume!

If I have my arm resting on the window sill of my car, with my wrist facing outward, when I bring my arm back into the car, the Planet Ocean's dial is glowing, even on a bright, sunny day! Really is impressive!

I have 7 3/4" wrist, so I'm sure the weight may be more noticable for other people, but I happen to like the weight and feel of the watch on my wrist... no complaints!

My 42mm Liquidmetal PO weighs in at 195gm with all the links.

The bracelet adds most of the weight but its design balances the watch on your wrist.

Interesting, I wasn't aware it was that much heavier than Rolexes (e.g. the SeaDweller 16600 is 147 grams).

OK,I now officially want one

I was offered a stunning discount for a brand spank new one in Las Vegas 2 months ago,I should have not let that go.

For your information, the store was " Paradis Jewelers" inside Mandalay Bay resort shopping promenade between the Mandalay Bay and the Luxor.
I've got this hint from this forum and after my visit I can tell hands down those guys need business very bad for giving such a huge discount !!!

You will not regret it, its the best watch I have owned so far. The detail in it is amazing, the subtle date aperture, the glow all night lume which my girl friend hates, the 12,6,9 dial, the interesting arrow hands, the double sided anti reflective coating is sublime sometimes with an eerie purple tint.. I could go on all night. Its stunning to look at and amazing value for money, compared to a Sub. I am seriously seriously toying with the idea of selling my Sub and getting a black PO to go with my orange one for more formal times, as the Sub never gets worn now.

I also think its one of the few watches that truly looks comfortable on a variety of straps, Rolex look good on a Nato, but some leather straps just look a little bit out of place.

Thats my humble opinion, for what its worth!

My 45.5mm PO is a strap and I don't feel it at all, I've worn one with the bracelet and it is not heavy, it just feels well built and sturdy.

I totally agree with this insightful offering. My 42mm PO is one of the workhorses of my collection. The build quality, including the bezel and bracelet, are absolutely amazing. And you gotta admire the surfaces on the case and how about those amazing hands....

Weight-wise, this watch is just about PERFECT. At this point I think it's more comfortable then the smaller/lighter Sea Dweller and the larger/heavier Deep Sea, so it's presently getting more wrist time than either. So, when you really think about it, what's not to LOVE about the 42 PO???

The PO is a heavy watch but it is something you will get used to over time. As a matter of fact, I thought it was very comfortable because the watch would hug around your wrists perfectly without any agile edges.

I would think that if a watch was "too heavy" for daily wear there's always other alternatives, such as different straps to make the weight feel more balanced on one's wrist. My Deepsea on a rubber Breitling strap feels much lighter compared to when it's on its original steel bracelet, for example.

Ok I'm sold !!
I'm off to London and Paris next week, hopefully I'll find good deals on one. I've usually been pretty lucky in Paris, scored a 33% off on a brand new IWC Top Gun 2 years ago, let's see if they can be nice again with a returning customer

it will not disappoint, Andy.

the 42mm is very very comfortable on my 7.25" wrist.
the extra weight is hardly noticeable if the bracelet is adjusted properly.

it just feels "so right" for all the right reasons

which combo are you after? bezel/dial colour combo? leather strap? braclet? or mesh?

my sincere congrats in advance!
