There are two customers. Those that want lume and those that don't. Rolex has models of each.

Rolex lume works fine if used properly. And that is to charge it with bright light before expecting it to work right.

If you do not want lume, why do you buy watches with lume? There are so many watches without lume - but an all purpose watch (like the submariner etc. should have a lume!). Whenever I wear my watches from the 70´s with their dead tricium I am remembered of the useful lumen - just my opinion out of experience.

I love lume! I often will deliberately stick my arm out in the sun while driving just to get a charge. I rarely wear my watches in the dark. I just like to see it glow. I too wish it were stronger and would last longer... wait was that my wife speaking!

So guys, which modern (<30 years) model Rolex offers no lume? Not that I am so desperate that I'm going to rush out and buy one.

Get one produced before 1998, then you will get dead tritium instead. Personally I really like lume. Those rare rare moments when the watch is actually glowing slightly is very nice

I will admit that playing with the lume is a fun thing, and there are some impressive lume shots posted here. But, on a classy watch, is just dosen't seem right, IMO.

With your clock radio and cell phone it sounds like you don't need to wear a watch.

I like lume, I will not travel or wear a watch to bed that does not have good lume.

Maybe Rolex should spend some of it's $$ on lume development, and create a new "in-house" lume that actually glows brightly and lasts. I feel like the lume is one feature on Rolexes that is constantly complained about...

I personally prefer the look of the old tritium because of the various patinas it can develop. The only downside, in my opinion, is the crumbling/cracking over time. I guess time will tell how super luminova holds up...

I love lume on my watches, but I wish Rolex's lume was stonger. Panerai's lume is like a freakin torch compare to my Rolexes.

I don't agree with lume cheapening watches but it is utterly useless within a few minutes of putting the light out. Never mind eight or nine hours, with me eight or nine minutes is about the limit of lume.

I can only imagine that tritium must have been pretty amazing by comparison - real all night long lume.

I don't like my watches glowing in the dark being a distraction or inviting attention. Noticed it in the darkened movie theater once. Seemed nuts that reaching for the soda cup was noticeable from 5 seats down because my wrist was glowing.
Remember Timex Indiglo? At least you could turn it off.
FWIW, my Tudor has only tiny specks above the number indices and a thin area on the hands.

I have a late model Explorer I, and I don't think a whole lot of the lume on it.
After about 10 min. in darkness, I can barely read it.

I have a Bulova that cost me about $80.00 a year ago. This thing can be read all through the night when I leave it on the night stand. I went to the movie a couple nights ago, and after two hours in a dark theatre , it was still shinning great.

I wish all my other watches lume were as good as this one. I like my Rolex, but I think that they could improve the lume they use, without too much of an expense.

No need for Rolex to develop "in-house" lume. Just use tritium tubes. I am seriously considering a Ball watch because of the lousy Rolex lume.

I've had some of the stronger lumed watches, and while I agree the older Rolexes had fairly weak Lume, not horribly but not great, the Lume on my Sub-C however is very good, it charges quickly and lasts all night. My Panerai Sub has great Lume too, perhaps slightly better, but only because they use more.
