Icon5 Please help me decide on how to fix this. See Pics!

Hello All!

I really need your input on this one...the question may sound a little dumb but I am over-protective with my watches (as most of you are).

Last week I posted about the issue. A sales rep from one of those "cleaning cloths / cleaning green solutions" Kiosk at the mall damaged part of the bezel of my TT Blue Sub (YES dumb me for letting him "show me" how to clean it).

After A LOT of complaining, the owner appears to be on-board to giving me $1000 to fix the issue (that's what the AD quoted to replace the exterior 18K bezel).

Based on the images below of the damage...If and when I get the $1000 cash, should I:

Option 1- Fix the watch with the A.D.

Option 2- Fix it using an aftermarket 18K bezel (insert stays original) that costs $420.00 and supposedly looks exactly the same....solid 18K gold too.

Option 3- Keep the $1000 and leave watch as is.

The images below are not too great, that is the closest I can get with the Iphone. If you notice there are about 7 teeth of the bezel, from number 40 to 50 that are really rounded up...that's what that cloth did to it...it "melted/polished" the gold part too much.

I'm going to start with, you were really upset at what happened to the watch right?
Then, why even contemplate using an after market option??? Makes no sense and sounds like you just want to pocket some cash and take the cheaper option...
You complained enough to have been offered 1 K to fix it..Then fix it correctly through your AD and get your watch back to original condition with ORIGINAL parts!!

PS: Next time a kiosk in the mall says "show me your Rolex!", keep on walking!

Couldn't have said it any better.

I wouldn't give a mall kiosk guy a G Shock.

Get it back to original condition. Then sell the left over part for whatever you can get for it, and go to a nice steak house, not at the mall. :)

Trust I (and my wife) already beat my head with a stick a couple of times for handing of a $7K watch to that "dude".

Ever since it happened last week, I do nothing but stare at those freaking overly buffed teeth every time I wear this watch.

My wife and friends swear that "you can't see it"...but I just can't stand it.

I wish I could get the damaged bezel back...did you know that Rolex demands that I send them back my damaged bezel back? That they only "replace it". I found that ridiculous by the way, seeing that I am paying $1000 for the new one and that the gold on the damaged piece itself is worth well over $300.00...

I was thinking about opening another thread about that same issue.

Why would you hand your precious Sub to a complete stranger? One that you should have known has absolutely no clue .... Get it fixed properly man. An aftermarket bezel is a big NO in my book.

EDIT: Sorry, I don't mean to sound judgmental ... as they said below .. take it as a learning experience.

I would fix it right (new OEM bezel) in a heartbeat with the $1k and sell the messed up bezel and pocket that cash.

Rolex will indeed replace and keep the original part...
However, this is not costing you a cent and should not factor in the decision.

Chaulk it up to a lesson learned~

I'm not really quite sure what I'm looking for in the pictures but if it bothers you that much then I would get it replaced. If you haven't already, I would get some sort of written statement with a signature that they agreed to pay you $1k. Good luck!

Tell rolex the bezel pop off and couldn't be found...keep it for a spare or scrap.

I think this is the route- with the exception of giving it to the dude that paid $1k for it.

Just send it in and get the bezel replaced. End of story and lesson learned. No need to try and profit from this.

Makes sense to have Rolex replace it. Then that blue beauty will be back to it's original grandeur. Keep us posted!

I know it's been said here earlier, but WHAT was your thought process when you removed your watch and handed it to some guy at the mall?

I had a mall guy spot my Omega Seamaster 2254.50 from across the mall aisle as he yelled out an offer to clean it. I kept right on walking.

BTW, send it to RSC and get it fixed if it bugs you. It won't STOP bugging you.

The decison has probably been made but I would never consider aftermarket pieces for a Rolex (it's not like putting a non-Rolex leather band or something...we're talking about a part no other watch but those can have). Therefore I would either keep the money and the damaged bezel or send the watch to Rolex to change the said part. Since you don't seem to be able to unsee the damage...I guess you know what you have to do.

I agree... Forget the aftermarket parts and forget the profit... get your watch back to original pre kiosk condition and move one... Done deal enough said.

What again is the damage?? All this hoopla for what exactly???

Only time my watch comes off is at home. Only time a stranger will be holding it
would be at an AD or some reputable shop -- A kiosk in the mall?? You are lucky to still have it

I'd agree with the statements that you need to do the right thing and not "make out" on the deal. The goal of insurance and any kind of compensation is to make you whole as you were before, not to put you in a better position than you were originally. The bottom line, if you ask me, is that you had a kid at the mall work on your Rolex. Not the most prudent thing in my opinion, for you or the kid. Given that you did that, it seems somewhat inappropriate that you are asking for a new bezel on a used watch, regardless of how much an AD will charge. And given that the kiosk owner will give you compensation for a new bezel, it seems highly inappropriate to be doing anything but putting a new bezel from Rolex.

If you pocket any cash, I just think it is bad karma, especially because it is likely that the kid who did the cleaning probably lost his job. You were a willing participant in this situation and if you pocket cash, it doesn't make you look good in the overall situation.
