Just curious if this is true. I have one and had been thinking about trading towards a new GMT II. If they do discontinue the date does it make it more valauble, and would it eventually be considered vintage?

After talking to my AD this morning who is also a personal friend he said he has 2 mens date watches that he will no longer be carrying. I am not sure if that means discontinued or just not in his store any longer. He is willing to discount them pretty hefty? If you find out anymore let us know. Thanks

OK Serenty this is what I found out just now. He said the particular model he has along with the other dates are being redesigned to be alittle bit bigger and wider. So the best I got out of it was the current size will be going away in lieu of one a little bigger and wider. Hope that helps!

That's an interesting rumor..

If true, it would take a watch that many shy away from today because of it's smaller size, and propel it into a highly sought after watch.

I'd buy a 40mm date !! (mabe even a 39)

Well the new Date models that I have seen have polished center links. The old all brushed link ones have been discontinued. I got my Dad the last one at mt AD.

Hmmm...If the so-called upgrades are little more than the blockier, thick lug cases, and the polished bracelets....count me out..

I have on ewith an oyster bracelet ss white face. Its a very conservative non flashy watch. I believe it's about 10 years old.
What do you guys think, should I trade it or wait until it becomes
"vintage" for a greater trade in value.

How does this balderdash get started? Just this past April at the Basil Watch Show, Rolex indroduced a newly designed Date model along with the redesigned Air King.

The case is STILL 34mm, but like the recent makeover of the Datejust, the lugs and case are slightly different to make the case look slightly larger. In addition, for the Date model, the center links are now polished and the clasp has been redesigned for both models, now resembling the clasp on the Oyster Datejust.

The DATE is NOT going away anytime soon. On this forum, it and the Air King may be a poor stepsister to the 40mm watches that seem to be the norm, but out there in the 'real' world, the Date sells just fine, or at least fine enough to continue the manufacture.

And, heaven knows, there have been numerous postings here about the very few plusses and multiple minuses to thinking any Rolex is a candidate for long term investment. Sure, there are few and far between models that have acquired collector status, but the mainstream DJ's, Sub's, AK's, SD's, Expl.'s and DD's generally don't become more valuable as time goes on. Just ask any of the sellers of the pre owned pieces on this and other sales forums.

The old-style AK is no longer made, however. I asked my AD about that.

I am not sure about the discontinuation of the Rolex DATE, but if you look at the Rolex website, the AK, the Perpetual AND the DATE have been updated, so my guess is that the current (or rather "old") Date is also no longer produced like the old AK.

The Date is not being discontinued. Maybe I mis-spoke. It has just been upgraded with a polished center link bracelet.

The one I got for my Dad (the all brushed bracelet) has been discontinued.

I respectfully don't agree.

In 1990, I gave $500 for an unworn Air King. Going rate on a used AK in good condition (mine still looks new) is $2000.

In 1996, I gave $1100 for a pre-Tiger Tudor Chronograph that was new in the box. Today, that model generally sells for $3200-$3800.

They didn't skyrocket in value like a double red Seadweller, but they are worth more today than they were when I bought them.

17 and 11 years of great service and sells for more than I bought them for....nothing wrong with that!

I don't see nearly as many Dates in the case (1-2) compared with other models...however my AD has told me they are still a reliable seller. I have one and would never part with it. I like the smaller size, its a nice contrast to my bulkier Sub Date.
