Hhmmmm interesting-the thing had 15 bids. A few people were serious about this one. Really no description with the item, either.

Maybe it's a mistake dial like when misaligned postage stamps or baseball cards become so much more valuable due to scarcity? Haven't seen a red GMT dial in my recent studying.

Me either. I've seen a four line red GMT Master and a Chuck Yeager in red on a GMT Master one but not a three line one like the dial that sold for $25k .

As rare as it gets it seems ....

In my distant memory I recalled reading about the red 6542 dial.

A quick hunt on VRF and I found an old post that included this link.

No promises that the info. is correct but that seller claimed less than 20 such dials were produced ...

Yeah, I seem to remember the same think. I've never seen one though so I'm just going on reports.

There were red 6542s but very very few of them. I've seen a few here and there.

I tend to believe in a red 6542 more so than the white dial.

These are legitimate, and they are the very first (many believe pre-production mules) 6542 "bakelite" GMT Masters. They all have the exact same serial number range, and all are in a very close numerical proximity to one another (in the 112xxx range). All should also have the same very early 1955-dated casebacks. I have personally inspected three, and all three were within 6 digits of one another. This dial was pretty nice, with only shaved markers, but the dial surface being in much better condition than most that have appeared to date (by my count 5 of the reputed 10 or so have appeared in (semi) public thus far).

I don't know anything about vintage but someone help me out. What good is the dial without the proper serial number watch? I guess if I were going to spend that kind of coin I would want the whole package, not parts and pieces to create some frankenvintage. As soon as someone looks at the serial they will know its wrong for the rare red dial so....maybe it's a current owner of one of them?

You make the smart and logical conclusion. I would imagine the purchaser has either (i) an existing watch with a compromised or refinished dial, or (ii) knows where to get one. The dial is significantly less valuable without the matching watch, as most informed buyers would be aware if the dial were in a non-matching case.

i dont know about this conclusion.... if you have a period correct watch and then add this dial for this obscene sum, i suspect that the watch will be incredibly desirable. and you will make money. its nearly impossible to know if this dial was mated to a watch at a later date, so long as its matched with the correct case.
